2002 27" SONY Trinitron. Half-screen picture with bright line.
I was playing a video game this morning, and I believe I heard a small "pop" as half of my picture went away. It appears as though the top 45% of the picture has been condensed to a thin bright line, while the bottom portion of the image is fine. There is no additional deforming of the image, and no discoloration. All 4 inputs on the back of the TV are occupied - the problem is not input-specific. The set is out of warranty. Just curious about whether there is an easy fix. Details would be nice, or recommendations (although I was already considering purchasing a new TV, so that recommendation is not necessary). I will continue to check the site for updates. Thanks.

top half missing is in vertical circuit of set---if it is a 27 inch and this old consider retiring it and replacing----other option is consider having a shop repair it--a rough guess would be as high as 150 dollars parts and labor is possible for your problems.
This is a simple and common problem. The solder joints on the vertical output IC have cracked loose. I actually did a housecall on the exact same set with the exact same symptoms this morning! A good tech will resolder the pins of the vertical output IC and all other major solder joints on the main board and the set will play fine.
Is the green really bright with small white lines in the screen?? If it is its probably a shorted picture tube. That is if you still have sound. If you have no sound its probably a power supply problem in the sweep section of the set. This is not a repair for a consumer to do as its a solid state set and there are no user serviceable parts inside these sets. Get a service person to assit you with this repair. Good Luck
You have a vert sweep problem and unless you know how to trouble shoot this cuircit bring it to a pro. I found out mostly in these sets that the vert output IC is bad.. Also sometimes the b+ filter cap off the fly is leaky and made the IC to fail. Another thing is Im surprised to hear you got a pic with the vert failure and a bright line in the pic!! This could be a big problem when the sets fixed so dont run it too long like this. It could burn a line all the way across the screen and you will see a dark faint line in your pic because of this. BE CAREFULL!!
