Replace the spark plug first then go from there, try starting fluid if flooded but also as soon as it fires during starting pull back the throttle off choke sometimes you don't want to give the unit full throttle when starting 3/4 throttle is good enough

Obvious solutions won't start Lawn Mower!!!

Sounds like it's a fuel issue.
After the Carb rebuild, you put gas in the tank and started it up immediately. and ran it only 30 seconds.

If you look at the gas tank now, is it empty? Is there gas flowing out by the air filter? You sounds mechanically smart, just wondering if you messed up something with the carb rebuild and gas is flooding up into the carb. Check the Oil again, is it overfull from gas getting into the oil?

My Poulan 2005 17.5 HP, 42" mower runs a few minutes, then sputters and either almost dies, or does die. If it doesn't die, it will speed back up and I can mow 20 or 30 feet and it will sputter again, and...

I hope this helps as quickly as it helped me. Try cleaning the small vent hole in the gas cap. I had asked Fixya this question last year and it worked like a charm! Good luck.

Engine seems to flood out when increasing speed and dies

If it starts lightly smoking black smoke at high RPM it is flooding or getting too much fuel. The float is leaking you may have not set the float height correctly when you put that carb back together. Or the needle and set could be bad.

just adjust the accelerator cable that is connecting to the fuel pump.check the and repair the throttle cause its the reason why it wont start . Its flooding the because of too much release of gas to the carb.

When start go to rev it just dies

Remove the throttle stop adjuster and the air screw adjuster and spray carb cleaner in the holes.
Be sure to put these two screws back in the same hole they came out of. IMPORTANT > do not tighten these two adjusters down. Only screw these in until they LIGHTLY seat. Now turn each adjuster one and one half turns outward. Turn the pilot screw 1/4 turn counter clockwise. Check the float level. Before putting the slide back in the throat of the carb, move the clip on the jet needle one notch lower.Put the rest of the carb back together, clean the air filter and install the carb. Let the float bowl fill then start the engine. Adjust the idle speed with the Throttle stop screw. This process should get you back on the road. A “very helpful” rating for this answer? Thanks!

Oil causing a problem?

Sound as if you have too much oil in the machine. Anytime you see white or lite gray smoke it is a sign of too much oil. Before you go through the routine of cleaning the oil out of every nook and cranny, try unscrewing the spark plug and clean it with a soft rag. It would have oil on it preventing the machine from starting. If this does work and there isn't a lot of oil in the gas tank now, just continue running the engine until the smoke clears. It won't hurt anything. But if cleaning the plug doesn't help you will have to empty all gas and oil from the gas tank, refill with new gas, squirt a little gum out carb cleaner in your carb to remove any oil there (this can be done when you try to restart the engine). Remember, when you are mowing grass if you are mowing on a hill) of any knd, make sure to turn the mower so the gas tank is on a higher level than the oil.

It acts like it is flooded, starts with choke off and throttle depressed. runs until carb runs out of gas then dies

Yes, Your carburetor sounds like it needs cleaned. Or you may possibly need to purchase a carb. kit for your trimmer if the cleaning doesn't do any good. When cleaning the carb. use a Den Tek Brush, (teeth cleaning brush), to clean the small ports. Also, check the small screen in carb. Can get clogged easily.
