Question about Apple iMac G5 Desktop

IMac G5 3rd gen disassembly

Hey Mark! I am in a similar predicament... actually my iMac G5 3rd gen iSight died last September (2008) and I'm really pissed! I'm still paying for it (on my credit card bill) and it is just a pretty paperweight! I think I'm getting close to a solution but it requires some hard thinking. There is virtually NO documention for 3rd gen iMacs on the net... I am to the point where I just ordered an SATA dock so I can at least (I hope) recover whatever what was on my HD. That will be a task unto itself; again, there is very little information on the net about disassembly for the "backwards" assembly of the 3rd gen. You will need torx as well as phillips head screwdrivers first of all... The back does not come off... it is disassembled from the front. The face (bezel) has to come off, then the iSight, then the monitor (LCD screen)... then from there, I'm lost. I'm almost a week away from finding the answer. After I get the HD out and do what I have to do, I think it is a matter of replacing the PSU as well.
Will keep you informed. I know this may seem too late (your post being in Jan of this year) but put yourself in my shoes... I've been looking for a solution for almost a year.

Well, maybe it helps? This disassembling manual by apple is working. One thing I must to say - I´ve used my wife's plastic cooking knife instead.

My G5 tower is no longer recognising my external iSight camera. The only thing that happened was that I switched the G5 off and on again, it was working fine previously. Can you help? Many thanks

Best thing you can do is to determine whether its the port or the camera.
If you go to the Apple in the upper-left corner, and go to "About this Mac", then click "More information", it will start System Profiler. On the left side, under "Hardware", click on "Firewire" and see if your iSight shows up. If you have another FireWire device, plug it in, and see if it shows up there as well. The solution could just be a dead iSight (hopefully!). The worst case scenario is a dead FireWire bus...
If you have a dead iSight, I'd guess that ebay would be your best resource at this point. If its a dead bus, I'm afraid it won't be terribly cost effective to fix it :-/

I'm trying to find a web cam w/mic that is compatible for an imac m5521

Hi Krystine. If your imac has firewire ports then look on ebay for an Apple iSight Camera. If you haven't got Firewire - and even if you have. it's wqorth looking here http://agent.liquiddigital.com.au/

This is a USB version of the Apple iSight in all but name.
I've seen it working and can vouch for its quality.

Isight intermittent. G5 Imac 17" The Isight cam I have now dubbed 10sec cam turns off and has to be restarted.

I understand from your problem statement that the internal iSight camera in your G5 iMac turns itself off around 10 seconds after you turn it on.
Create a new temporary user in System Preferences / Accounts. Log out and then log in as this user. Enable the camera. Does it still turn off in 10 seconds? If not, something running in your other user account (a startup program or system preference) is interfering with the operation of your camera.
If you have a spare external drive, install a fresh version of the Mac OS on that drive, then boot from that drive. Does the camera still turn off in 10 seconds? If not, you should run an OS installation with "archive and install" on your internal drive. If it does, you have a hardware problem that requires a Mac tech. If this is indeed a G5 iMac, the repair will likely not be cost-effective.

IMac G5 no isight. Long beep at boot then flashing white light then grey screen and ? in file icon.

hi there,

The question mark usually relates to the computer not finding a system. Usually a bad hardrive. The beep at the beginning can be faulty RAM.
I would suggest taking the computer to your closest authorised apple dealer for them to diagnose further.

Cheers

IMac G3 Not Starting

Hey, RexKing:

Your problem is hard to diagnose with your current description without knowing where the clicking sound is coming from or exactly what it sounds like, but most likely the problem resides either with the power supply or its connection to the circuit boards. If you have access to any scrapped G3 iMacs to cannibalize for parts at an E-recycling depot, you can probably find just about anything you need, as long as you get the right model, as they changed key components a few times, but, like cars, a lot of parts cross over. The exact model description is on the bottom in really fine print.

In any case, you will have to take it apart to check out the power supply and/or other components, which is a bit tricky without a guide. You can find a really comprehensive Apple iMac G3 service document, for many of the later models, posted at this URL as an 11 Mb PDF file:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/103447/iMac-G3-Disassembly-Guide?autodown=pdf

Only catch is that to download it you need to sign up for a free SCRIBD account. (It's a document sharing co-op site.) Hopefully this won't result in years of spam. Good luck, and if you figure out the cause, please let me know. (I have about a dozen iMac G3s that I am gradually refurbishing.)

I have a similar problem, unit not used since September 2008, now will not find any satellites. Self test all ok.   I know software updates were made available from time to time, last updated in 2004 by previous owner.
