Question about Coleman Electrical Supplies

1 Answer

After several years of storage, my 5000 watt generator will not produce current. I was told the magnets inside would loose there magnitism and could be brought back to life by using a 9volt battery. I am not sure about what to charge with the battery if this would even make a difference in the unit. I checked the reset breaker as well as all connections and they all look fine. Thanks for the advise.

You will need to flash the rotor field of the generator, it's not difficult, or dangerous. Take the rectangular cover off the end bell and get 12 volt battery ready, get jumpers ready:

    • Start generator

    • Obtain a 12 volt DC car battery

    • make two jumper leads from wire long enough to reach from battery to brush assembly of rotor.

    • connect + positive lead from battery to top, or right side brush holder.

    • take - negative wire from battery and just 'touch' the other brush holder which is negative.

    • Check for voltage out @ plugs

    • Flash 3 times, if nothing out, move on to further testing.

Follow these steps to flash the generator: Plug the electric drill into the generatorreceptacle. (Cordless drills do not work) If the drill is reversible, move the direction switch to the forward position. Start the generator. While depressing the trigger on the drill, spin the drill chuck in reverse direction.

To restore the small amount of residual magnetism necessary to begin voltage buildup, connect a 12 volt battery to the exciter field while the generator is at rest, as follows: Remove exciter field leads F+ and F- from the voltage regulator.

Where are the exciting field wire fuses located

Try putting 12 volts DC across the commutator coils at the brushes, sometimes the generator looses it's magnetic field and this could possibly restore it but make sure it is a low current not a car storage battery.

Good luck,

Why wont it produce electricity?

It lost it's magnetic field. Try putting 12 volts across the brushes just for a second or two. Do not use a car storage battery. Sometimes it may work using a 9 volt battery.

Good luck,

Aux battery not charging

For battery charging generator, let generators to produce electricity is through a belt connected to the generator split plate and automobile engine, the working principle of generator is magnetic power, that is part of a closed circuit conductor in a magnetic field will produce induced current for cutting the magnetic induction line exercise. Voltage shows 80 on 110v and 155 on 240v

if you take the end of the generator off you will see a rectifier or four diodes with a varister or a full wave brige rectifier, sounds like you have a bad diode, or a shorted exite winding to the rotor, the exite winding is a small turn winding feeds the rectifier board that ac signal is converted to dc to feed the rotor ,the rotor produces a magnetic field which rotates inside the stator windings , the magnetic lines of flux from this field cut through thre stator winding inducing a voltage in the stator coils. hope this helps

Without knowing the exact model generator you have, it may not even have an automatic voltage regulator (AVR). Colemans were known for losing what is known as "residual magnetism", especially when sitting for long periods of time without use. This residual magnetism is necessary for exciting the field to produce electricity. Here is what you can try: Plug a 110v drill into one of the 110 outlets. While the engine/generator is running, with an open hand (not fingers wrapped around it) spin the chuck while holding the drill trigger in the run position. Many times this small amount of current that will be produced by spinning the drill motor will restore the residual magnetism and excite the field. Keep in mind that if this works, the drill motor will begin to spin immediately since it is plugged into the outlet. Hope this helps.

My rv air conditioner won't run on a 5000 watt generator, it pops the breaker on the generator. It is a 15,000 on a 1992 prower regal travel trailer

Most likely the air conditioner draws more power than the generator can supply. Check the current needed for the air conditioner in amps. It should be on a plate attached to the it. If the generator is a 5000 watt it can supply 5000 divided by the voltage required by the airconditioner. i.e. 240 (=20.8 amps) if you live in the UK or Ireland or 120 (41.6 amps) in most of the rest of the world. If it's a 12 Volt Airconditioner than you divide 5000 by 12 Note this is the absolute maximum that can be drawn and as power generally fluctuates will still probably cause the circuit breaker to trip. You should ideally be drawing no more than three quarters of the current available. If there are other appliances being run off the generator this again reduces the amount of current available.

You may have just lost residual magnetism in your rotor. Start genset then apply 12 vdc to 120 v outlet for less the 1 seconds. This will be enought to restore the residual magnetism to the rotor and the unit should be producing power now.

Yes, that's exactly the issue. You should run it once a month to avoid this. Generators can't sit for a while or they will loose the charge that excites the coils for producing power

Generator stopped producing electricity

if the generator has been sitting for a while you might have to excite the magnets to start producing power. plug in a reversible drill and with the generator running turn the drill in the reverse direction by hand while holding the trigger in the forward position.
