If you attached the printer FIRST, before you installed the CD disk that comes with the printer, you will have conflicting drivers.
When you install device without installing it's drivers, Windows 'sees' the device, and matches up one of the thousands of generic drivers it has.
You need THE drivers for YOUR printer.
Windows will have a conflicting issue with which drivers to use. The ones it matched up, or the ones you installed.

A Driver, is software that allows an operating system to 'communicate' with a device. (Windows XP is an example of an Operating System)

Should you have connected your printer first, THEN installed the CD disk, this is how to correct the problem,

1.Go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs. REMOVE anything you see listed with Canon's name in it, pertaining to your printer. There may be more than one program.
You should be asked if you wish to restart your computer. NO!
Close all windows until you are back to the desktop screen, then shut your computer down normally. (Start>Turn Off Computer>Shut Down)

2.Computer off, and unplugged from the surge protector. (Electricity)

3.Press the Power On button in, and hold it in. Hold it in for a count of at least Five seconds. (Count, 1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, 1005)

4.Let go of the Power On button. Do this procedure Two more times.
(Number 3 and Number 4)
What you are doing is clearing any CMOS Error Codes, and resetting BIOS back to the factory default settings.

5.Now plug the computer back into the surge protector. WAIT 1 minute. Turn the computer on.

6.After Windows has fully loaded all the way, and any programs you have in the Start Up menu have loaded, install the CD disk that came with the printer. Follow the installation instructions.

7.Once the installation is done, you can restart your computer if asked. If you are not asked, go ahead, and restart your computer.

8.After Windows has fully loaded, and any Start Up programs have loaded, plug the USB cable from the printer into your computer.

9.Plug the printer into the surge protector. WAIT 1 minute, then turn the printer on.
