Question about Projection Televisions

THOMSON 40KW413 Rear Projection TV

I need help to diagnose the fault on my TV. Working ok then made a static noise, smell and shut down. Now if i try to turn it on it makes a short hissing noise and I hear the noise I use to associate with it turning on but nothing happens and after a couple of tries it shuts down, but the power LED flashes 4 then 8 times repeatedly, is this an error code of some kind? I really just need to understand if it is a feasible repair or time for a new one, I guess it is 4-5 ears old.

Re: THOMSON 40KW413 Rear Projection TV

Hello Perthi,

From what you have said, it can be surmised that a component has suffered a catastrophic thermal event (burnt up).

First I would suggest you get a schematic for the TV (if you plan on doing any work on the set yourself)

If you are not (the do it yourself type) then at least open up the set (powerd off and unplugged) and visually inspect the circuit boards and components to find any signs of thermally damaged (darkened and or burnt) components.

Check for blown fuses, cracks, and holes in components (stuff like this).

Once that is done, write down what happened, and then call a local TV repair shop (if you are not going to do it yourself) and have them make a house call to check your TV. Get an estimate and then decide your next course of action.

Now for my usual warning:

If you have a background in electronics, you know what equipment you will need to troubleshoot this problem, so I don't need to reinvent the wheel in this case, but I would still tell you that you need a schematic to do any proper kind of troubleshooting. If you do not have a background in electronics, please take your set to a qualified TV repair shop or have a qualified TV technician come to your place to examine the TV and give you an estimate of the cost of repair.

Thank you,
I hope this helps,

should have unplugged it when you noticed the smell.

UNPLUG and remove and look at lamp you installed--is something in the housing where lamp goes melted? I hope you did not touch the face of the bulb with your hand or fingers.

What ever is wrong find it before trying to use set again.

What is the life span for this tv? I am having a problem with some static or ghosting for about 1 minute and then the tv shuts down.Cable co. came checked everything and said its the tv.Have had it for 6...

Life span of no TV can be predicted. It can be according with its usage time and so many other things. I know a Sony 19" tv working perfectly since 1981. Some sets' life will be short, while the others will last long. Normally, a TV, which is used at high brightness all the time, like open bus stations and hotels etc will not last longer. Its picture tubes' emission will go out in no time. OK.

My Toshiba rear projection TV -43hx71 is periodically turning itself off and on while we are watching a program. What could this be?

When tv shuts down for some reason, does it turn on again itself or you need to press power button to turn it On?
Let me know how old is this tv and any other related info that you think might be helpful to diagnose problem.

A very loud static pop noise

i would suspect that you may have a defective coupling capacitor in your preamp or amp, try using another source input or and a different amplifier to help localize the fault, I do not suspect the cable as being the fault, and is more likely and amplifier problem

Tv made a noise and shut off

I would first suggest checking the lamp and see if it has gone out.
If this is not the problem, then I would suggest calling a local service center to come to your home to diagnose the problem.

I hope that this helps.
