Question about Televison & Video
I need help to diagnose the fault on my TV. Working ok then made a static noise, smell and shut down. Now if i try to turn it on it makes a short hissing noise and I hear the noise I use to associate with it turning on but nothing happens and after a couple of tries it shuts down, but the power LED flashes 4 then 8 times repeatedly, is this an error code of some kind? I really just need to understand if it is a feasible repair or time for a new one, I guess it is 4-5 ears old.
From what you have said, it can be surmised that a component has suffered a catastrophic thermal event (burnt up).
First I would suggest you get a schematic for the TV (if you plan on doing any work on the set yourself)
If you are not (the do it yourself type) then at least open up the set (powerd off and unplugged) and visually inspect the circuit boards and components to find any signs of thermally damaged (darkened and or burnt) components.
Check for blown fuses, cracks, and holes in components (stuff like this).
Once that is done, write down what happened, and then call a local TV repair shop (if you are not going to do it yourself) and have them make a house call to check your TV. Get an estimate and then decide your next course of action.
Now for my usual warning:
If you have a background in electronics, you know what equipment you will need to troubleshoot this problem, so I don't need to reinvent the wheel in this case, but I would still tell you that you need a schematic to do any proper kind of troubleshooting. If you do not have a background in electronics, please take your set to a qualified TV repair shop or have a qualified TV technician come to your place to examine the TV and give you an estimate of the cost of repair.
I hope this helps,
