Question about Pentax Optio A20 Digital Camera

1 Answer

The viewfinder does not display anything

When we turn on the camera, the display shows what looks to be a leaf and some squigly lines.

Hi!
The display is broken. They are not repairable, only replacable. You should contact your local Pentax service center. Small repair shops could do it too, as new displays are available on eBay.
Hope this helps!

There is something wrong with my Nikon D3000. It turns on but doesn't show anything on the screen and when I look through the lens it's shows a grainy dark film. It can't be the lense because I...

There seems to be two separate issues here. I'm going to assume you have a charged battery pack in the camera.

First, the screen. Turn the camera on. Do you see the menu when you press the MENU button? Does the shooting info show when you press the Info button? Can you see previously taken photos when you press the Playback button? If none of those show up then something is wrong with the screen (or the battery is dead).

Second, the viewfinder. First, make sure the viewfinder in the back is clean. Now turn the camera on and look through the viewfinder. Do you see the eleven focus marks? Do you see the info at the bottom? Now turn the camera off and remove the lens. Don't touch anything inside the camera! Do you see a mirror at a 45-degree angle? Is it clean? Look at the focusing screen above the mirror. Is it clean? Now look through the viewfinder and point the camera out a window. Do you see a more-or-less white blob, or the same grainy dark film?

How do I display a grid in the viewfinder when taking pictures?

Are you sure you saw this in your D40x?
I know this is in my camera under personal settings and called raster in viewfinder. But I can't find anything in the D40 or D40x manual.

My camera shows a line down the screen on the camera and on the photo whilst looking at in on a computer, maybe a pixel out? any ideas?

NOT a good sign - if there is a line on the LCD only then is wouldn't show on the PC.
As it shows on both Cam LCD and PC then it looks like a CMOS sensor fault and the sensor is the 'heart' of the camera.
A quick check would be to switch the viewfinder from LCD to viewfinder and use your eye to focus etc. Take a snap and display on the PC. If there is still a line missing then it can only be the sensor.
The Sensor is a very large grid of transistors which are light sensitive so a 12meg image uses all 12 meg transistor cells , which store light and then a micro Controller scans each cell collecting the data.
Sounds like you have a column address line missing - this is going to be a factory job or a very good Fuji repair shop. -- Ray

Turn on camera..view finder and/or display screen

The s7000 has three different display modes: Screen, viewfinder, and off. Screen is for looking at the big screen, viewfinder is for looking through the digital viewfinder, and off should turn off all the displays. Try pressing the DISP button once. That should reactivate the screen and make it possible to use the camera again.

Camera's screen is black, but still takes pictures.

Think that you might have accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the LCD display on and off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn the screen back on, try pressing the DISP button once with the camera turned on.

When I turn on my camera the LCD screen is balck and I cant see anything thruough the lens. It does take pics because when I upload the disck Ic an see the new pics

Double check if the viewfinder is operable (not the LDC but the little thing you look through with one eye above it). Try pressing the display button to flip through the different modes as you're looking through the viewfinder. If the viewfinder does work (and the LCD screen doesn't come on as you're scrolling through the modes) then it is most likely dead (broken). If the viewfinder works, you're can still use the camera otherwise it's probably time to get a new one.

When switched on, display reads "In synchronized monitor mode"

Cycled through display options, still couldn't get viewfinder image. Checked images already on card, and they showed OK, so screen operating properly. Went back to viewfinder mode, got lots of horizontal lines across screen. Realised I could do no more, so took camera to shop it was bought from, who checked it and said it had an electronic problem that needed professional repair facility, so camera has gone for an estimate of repair cost.

LCD display showing shattered lines - no picture displayed

Hello CathyCool The LCD itself may not have problems. If it ain't broken it most probably doesn't have a problem. Most likely the problems you have are given by a faulty connector between the LCD and the camera's mainboard. You should take the camera to a service center to have it checked. Tell them to make an estimate over the repair costs before they actually do something. In this way you will know what prices can you espect over the repair. I'll give about 60% chances that this is a minor defect involving that connector. In this case they will just need to reconnect it back firmly.

LCD Monitor on ,and the Electronic Viewfinder turned off

If you turn on the back LCD, the electronic viewfinder will remain on while in a shooting mode. There is no setting on the camera to use only the back LCD monitor while shooting. If you playback images in the Play mode, only the LCD monitor will turn on. However, if you press the Monitor button while in the Play mode, than the back LCD monitor will turn off. The image will display only in the viewfinder LCD.
