My washer fills with water while not running

You will need to replace the hot/cold water inlet solenoid. IF the water is flowing into the washer, when the washer is off, the gasket is damaged in the solenoid OR the solenoid has failed. This should fix your problem.
Appliance Parts house should have the part, turn water off and unplug from electricity - remove hoses (catch water with pan), should have about three screws holding it to the body of the machine. remove from machine mount, remove wires, one at at time and remount to new part, install new solenoid to body of washer, reassemble case, replace hoses, plug in, and test.
Should fix problem. I would suggest replacing hose washers, while you have the hoses off from the back of the machine. May leak from there next, if not replaced.
Hope this helps...

Our HE3t washer dispenses the fabric softener as soon as you put it in, I was adding a garment and the downy was running in and I had not even started the washer.

May be a defective solenoid. there is a solenoid that is (probably) under the top of your washer. There should be 2to4 screws on the baqckside, at the top. UNPLUG the washer, then slide the top back off the machine. There should be 2 solenoids hooked inline with tubes going from the dispenser to the tub.
Undo the wires of the solenoids, AFTER marking the wires so they get back in the right place. Swap the wires. POLARITY matters so BE CAREFUL. plug washer in to wall socket and add some sofetner. If the softener stops, you have bad solenoid. If not you need to check voltages.

Machine fills up with water and stops what causes this?

There is solenoids that switches on the differents modes of the washers capablities. The timer has a cogged wheel that trips switches which in turn runs power to the solenoid. If the solenoid is faulty when the timer gives power to a solenoid and the solenoid will not work the washer stops

My washer won't fill when you put it on the cold cycle

Does it fill in hot cycle? (I'll assume the cold water valve at the wall is turned on and you know for certain that the water flows from that point.) It is possible you have either a stuck or bad water solenoid in the washer. I would first verify power to the solenoid (you could have a bad wire). If the solenoid's ok, and you can get to it (some disassembly required) you may be able to persuasively tap the solenoid to unstick it.

Leak into washer

The solenoid for the water intake is faulty. It may just have some crud stuck in it. You have two, one for hot and one for cold connected directly to the hoses on the back. You can shut off the cold water supply and see if it still leaks - if it does the hot water solenoid is faulty - if the leak stops then the cold water solenoid is bad.

Replacing spin belt whirlpool clothes washer

There is no belt. This is a direct drive unit. There is a motor coupler located between the motor and the transmission.

Maytag top loading washer

turn tap on---- sorry I thought it Funny

water flow is controlled by solenoid valves attached to inside rear wall of washer.
usually cold water fails first by the most use.
they are simple to replace, can be ordered from local store by model number or by pulling the old one off and taking it in, everybody has them, mnaytag fitsd kenmore fits whirlpool fits just about all.

If only the cold water solenoid has failed, to get the washer going, for use (the result will be cold water wash only)

open the rear panel
locate the 2 solenoid valves, trace the water lines in to the first !+~3inch diameter electrical gadgets, those gadgets are the solenoids.
swap the power cables between the solenoids
put the back -back on
swap the hose connections on the taps
now the burned out solenoid is in the hot water line, and cold water is available for wash and rinse.
If you buy a replacement solenoid then swap cables and hose back. but second solenoid will proobably last as long as first did as long as you dont mind cold water only
