Most likely you are not doing anything wrong, but your hard drive may be failing.

SOURCE: windows. file missing or corrupt system32 config

If you're running XP, boot to the XP cd, if available (if not, mail me and I can send you a dell XP disc)
Pass the first repair opportunity, press f8, then it should allow you to do a windows repair. Do that. You will keep all your files, but windows will be completely reloaded. Will need to get updates, but that's it.
Good luck

You need to reboot using the first disc in the series. Make sure that the AC adapter is plugged in, and check your bios settings and disable any power managment settings, in order to prevent the machine from going into standby, sleep, etc.

You should be able to make it through the entire series. If you can't, you may need to contact HP for a new set of discs, or if you have an HP authorized service provider, such as a Staples, Best Buy, etc; they can usually get the CDs a lot faster, and usually at the same cost, or maybe a little higher.

SOURCE: Windows doesn't recognize recovery partition after os reinstall

The issue you are having involves using multiple systems,...If your emachine came with vistan and you installed xp, you voided your warranty status...However remove your dual boot and stick to vista if you wanna keep your restore partition working properly.....On a side note theres usually conflict with running OEM OS's on dual boot...typically it doesnt work and if it does it doesnt work like you want it to! so here is what you can do..Call Emachine up and fib to them a bit (just alittle) tell them that you cought a nasty bug and it messed with your restore partition and now you cant restore your pc....request the factory programing discs (if you ask nicely they'll hook you up 99.99% of the time) you get the discs so you can reprogram the pc to factory spec if you ever wanted to. Now use a retail version of vista and a retail version of xp. and create your dual boot, feel free to remove your restore partition if you want (cause you have the factory programing discs if you wanna go back to stock stuff YAY) I hope this helps!

Accidentally deleted recovery partition and need to run a recovery/repair. No recovery discs. What do I do?

I ran into the same problem with a friends Hewlett-Packard laptop that was 6 years old. Problem is the manufacturers only retain Recovery Discs now for 3 years. I found a company located in England that has been authorized by Microsoft to issue "Original" software discs paired to your paticular machine using your "Service Tag" information from your machine. The company website is as follows:
https://zoftar.com/

I downloaded the OS and driver discs from the internet to make recovery copies for the laptop which was cheaper than getting discs from the company, which is also an option. The downloads I purchased was approximately $45.00 US and was worth every penny of it . Hope this helps!

Reinstalling windows

I would not know if you have a Recovery Partition. The Factory Recovery disk can, usually, be had at the Computer's website, support. You can find a User manual here: http://www.manualslib.com/manual/212734/Averatec-Av2225-Eh1.html

Trying to reformat Compaq Presario CQ50

Did you create a set of Recovery discs for this machine, before you wiped out Vista and installed Windows 7? There is a utility to do this and it relies on the original windows to work. When you formatted Vista, you erased the Recovery links from the windows partition, that allows the recovery to take place. The Recovery has to 'see' the original OS to confirm it is on the correct machine. It is known as a 'fingerprint' and is checked by the BIOS to make sure it is not being Pirated. If you have the key on the bottom, you may be able to download a new copy of Vista just for Compaq machines, and it will legally activate.

How do i reset my laptop to its original factory settings.

Hi shaw_dominic,

You can perform a recovery from the partition on the hard drive from either the Start button or F11.

To restore the system from the partition, follow these steps:

1) Access Recovery Manager in either of the following ways:
- Select Start > All Programs > Recovery Manager > Recovery Manager.
- or -
Restart the computer and press F11 while the "Press for recovery" message is displayed
on the screen. Then select Recovery Manager.
2) Recovery Manager opens.
3) Click Advanced Options.
4) Click System recovery, and then click Next.
5) Follow the on-screen instructions.

Hi there .I would like to help my friend use the recovery partition on her compaq presario c700 laptop to either use her recovery dvds or simply to reformat(restore the computer to original factory...

The recovery partition is usually hidden and cannot be seen in the Windows operating system with out adjustments to the way the files are displayed.

Most likely they are present and you can use the following methods to access the HP Recovery Manager utility.

PLEASE NOTE: Using the recovery utility will result in a complete loss of data. Please backup any data you wish to preserve before running the HP Recovery Manager as all data such as photos, documents, music and favorites will be completely erased after the recovery is complete.

There are 3 ways to recover an HP/Compaq PC using the HP Recovery Manager.

Method 1 involves booting into the Windows Operating System, and starting the Recovery Manager from the HP utilities.

Method 2 involves pressing the "F11" key during initial startup to access the Recovery Manager from the recovery partition.

Method 3 involves using personalized recovery disks created by the user when the machine was new or a replacement set of recovery disk obtained form HP.

Follow the on screen prompts to complete the process. As the machine is has been set back to how it was from the factory, make sure to apply all Windows updates as there will be approximately 3 years worth, including 2 service packs, many critical updates and driver updates.

I have just purchased a HP 2133 mini-note. On first installation, installation failed and now it just loops and wont do anything. How can I facilitate first installtion bearing in mind there are no disks...

The majority of these PCs have a recovery partition on the internal hard drive, here is the instructions for using it.
Recovering information using Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)
Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) can perform a recovery from either an optional external hard
drive or from recovery discs.
CAUTION: Using Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) will completely erase hard drive contents
and reformat the hard drive. All files you have created and any software installed on the computer will
be permanently removed. When reformatting is complete, the recovery process will restore the operating
system, as well as the drivers, software, and utilities from the backup used for recovery.
To initiate recovery using WinRE, follow these steps:
NOTE: This process will take several minutes.
1. If possible, back up all personal files.
2. Restart the computer, and then press f8 before the Windows operating system loads.
3. Select Repair your computer.
NOTE: The "Repair your computer" option is displayed only if the WinRE partition is intact. If the
option is not displayed, refer to “Recovering information using a Windows Vista operating system
DVD (purchased separately).”
4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
5. Click Next.
6. Select your user name, type your password (if applicable), and then click OK.
7. If you are using recovery discs, insert the last disc of the recovery disc backup set.
NOTE: Inserting the last disc of the backup set confirms the presence of a valid backup. If you
insert any other disc, the backup will not be recognized.
– or –
If you are using an optional external hard drive, connect it to the computer.
8. Click Windows Complete PC Restore.
9. Follow the on-screen instructions.

this is getting long , so ill will post more steps in comment.....

After reformatting - hard drive is only 10GB

Hp and Compaq usually have drives partitioned into 2, second is used for recovery. What I'm thinking happened here might be that when you re-install your windows, you might have picked the smallest size(2nd partition). The only way out is to re-install your windows and when you do that, you kust delete the biggest partition or try partiton magic.
