My Pentair Challenger pool pump has had all o-rings replaced and the band, yet it still sprays out water when first turned on. Am I using too much lubricant or is the band not tight enough?

You need only apply small amount of lube between thumb and forefinger and turn o ring clockwise to apply lube to it. do not over lube o rings they may not seal. You may have to take pump apart and remove all excess lube. Also check for obstruction in discharge line you may also tighten band

SOURCE: Our 1.5 HP pentair challenger pump isn't holding its prime

Usually, if a pump will not hold its prime, there is an air leak somewhere in the system. Things to look for are small leaks around the equipment-could be a bad o-ring. If you do not see any leaks, turn off the pump, remove the lid from the basket, check it for a hairline crack and check the o-ring under the lid to see if it is the cause of the loss of pressure.

SOURCE: pool pump was on had a storm electric went out.

Pull the lid and strainer basket off your pump and reach in (electricity will be off at this point) and make sure that the pump inlet isn't blocked with debris from the storm... small stuff can get thru the strainer and jam up the pump motor... I know...i've got the pool from hell ...constantly jamming the pump...but it's next to a huge evergreen tree...

after you get the debris out, take a crescent wrench and remove the cap off the motor shaft on the outside of the pump. Turn that shaft with a wrench back and forth to free up the motor and dislodge the debris... if it frees up, put it all back together and turn the power on...you may have to repeat this process a coupe of times to completely clean the impellers in the pump.... good luck!

SOURCE: challenger pump leaking at the band

You may need a seal plate o-ring or you may have a shaft seal leak. See if you can determine if there is water running down the outside of the seal plate from where the motor mates to the seal plate.

SOURCE: Need to replace old pump.

easy both of them are junk. get a (sta-rite max e click on it) a 1.5 hp should do just fine. the 2hp is to run your spa and not economical to do unless you you have two pumps one for the pool and one for the spa.. if you have a 2 story house with solar you will need a 2hp
used pumps can be tricky so search for your local pool pump repair guy and see if he could build you one, this will save you money and be handy if you need repairs in the future ! ask him how to take care of your pump !

Pentair challenger 1 horse pump; motor running ok, sounds a bit noisy, now does not pump at full force, water does not fill the pot even after primed start, pressure guage reads 0 psi before read 20...

check the impeller for debris. you will have to take the metal band off that connects the wet end to the seal plate. inspect the impeller for debris. lube all o-rings and reassemble. if that does not work, investigate a blockage in the suction side plumbing.

Inter seal won't let the pump close

you..you need to lube the seal, it may be that the seal has been damaged by chlorine and may need a new one, these pumps are fragile so do not over tighten the ss band ,tap it lightly with a hammer as you tighten it all the way around..and prime THE PUMP WITH WATER AFTER ANYREPAIR !

Air in pool

you need to look at all intake pipes and seal ('O' ring) around pump skimmer box.

Use a bucket of water to tip over pipe work (while pumping) see if you can see where leak is.

Go to your pool shop and get some multipurpose pool lubricant used on o-rings and gaskets - put on all seals.
