One of 2 things. The part on the end of the starter called a bendix is bad (most likely and less expensive) or the ring gear that the bendix engages is bad. (less likely MORE expensive). If you are comfortable with the work try locating a starter locally and replace it yourself.

It may be your fuel pump or fuel pump relay switch. The issue, as it happened to me for my 1997 Z3. 2.8L engine; was driving down the road, then just lost power. Upon retart the engine/battery has plenty of power, but will not turn over. Plenty of gas and all fuses look good. I'm told it's the fuel pump or fuel pump relay switch. You may have a similar issue.

Wiring diagram 1999 buick century. Starter engages when battery cables are bolted to battery.

-the wires are not correctly re-installed for the starter.
- u may need wiring diagram
Did you take pictures before you took it apart, or did you tag wires before unconnecting them.

1999 Pontiac Sunfire 5 speed won't start. Replaced spark plugs and checked ignition coil (fine). Sounds like it wants to turn over but makes a "whining" noise. Please assist. Thank you!

Is the engine turning over with the key in the start position? If the engine is not spinning over and you hear a whining noise, the starter is not engaging the flywheel. If the engine is turning over with the starter engaged, the engine has most likely jumped time that creates low or no compression which results in the whining noise.

Starter motor turns but wont engage

A lot of times and on most vehicles, when the Starter turns over but will not engage, that means the Bendix inside the starter is not pushing the starter gear out to engage in starting your engine. Best solution would be to just simply replace the starter. Sometimes you can have the starter rebuilt, but in most cases the fasted and simplest way is to replace it. Hope this helps

86 Chevy Suburban not starting.

Is the starter actually turning the engine over (engaging), or is it just whirring rapidly? If it is not engaging, then the vehicle certainly will not start. If it is not engaging, there is most likely a shimming issue to be addressed to get the starter to engage. If it is engaging, check carefully the large nut in the starter solenoid. There are usually more than one wire attached to this nut. Ensure that you have not missed replacing any of the wires that came off the starter studs. Some feed back to the fuse paqnel and can be critical for operation.

Starter runs but won't engage flywheel

Hello, I would make sure that your car is not one of those half year cars becuase two differn't starters may be offered for the same year of car. Also, I would check and see if your battery has enough CCA's to power your system. The only other thing is to turn your crankshaft with a breaker bar to turn your flywheel to possibly get a fresh area of teeth on it. If none of this fails it's as simple as just replacing the flywheel. If you did a bench test on the starter and the bendix engaged that is good. Buying parts from an Auto parts store does not gurantee the part is good and that the bendix engages the full distance to turn the flywheel. I would try to find a mechanic who rebuilds starters to make sure that the bendix is engaging fully. I hope this helps you!
