USB port does not recognise USB hard disk - ASUS Pundit-PH3 (PUNDITPH3) Barebone

    Thanks Roety,

The USB drives (I have tried 2 of them) are detected by other systems including my laptop and 2 other desktops. The one difference between the desktops that can detect the USB drive and the one that cannot is that the desktop that cannot is using XP SP2 while the others are using various (Business/Ultimate) versions of Vista. But I dont see why this (Vista vs XP) should be a problem.

I already tried using the disk management utility you linked. Thanks anyway.

One option I intend to try is to open the case and check the jumpers etc..

The light on the USB drives comes on but I can tell that the USB hard disk is not spinning as there is no noise or vibration usually associated with a working USB hard drive.

Hi, you probably need to partition and format the drive, this can be done by removing it from the USB case and connecting it directly to the IDE or Sata connector, but first try using the disc managment system if running windows XP its located in the control panel within the administrative tools button, here is a helpful link that goes into detail about how to do this. link if not using XP google disc managment for your OS and partition and format the drive so windows can detect it.
Thanks
Eric

Have iMac ejected hard drive so I could remove now computer won't recognise the hard drive

First thing I would do if the drive is connected via a usb hub connect it directly to the imac, then if that does not work try one of the other usb ports. If that does not work connect it to a usb port you know works and then go into the applications folder and then into the utilities forlder and open up disk utility. Once opened your hard drive should appear in the left hand box click on your external hard drive then go to the first aid panel and run verify disk and if any problems appear run repair disk. Hope this helps.

I am not recognising kigston data traveller

When the flash memory USB hard drive device appears to malfunction it maybe possible to restore it by reformatting it. Insert the flash or USB hard drive into the USB port then Click on Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management.
Then right click on Disk 1 removable drive and click Format. After the flash drive has been formatted it will indicate that it is Healthy.
NOTE Formating the USB flash drive will delete your data.

Apollo 320gb external hdd is not recognised by PC . USB is enabled and recognises other devices.

If the drive came with a disk and they usually do I would recommend you install the disk first and after the installation has been carried out you then try to connect your hard drive via your usb port. Good luck. If this doesn't work then there may be incompatibility issues. What version of windows are you using? Andrew

Try connecting this drive to another PC/laptop. If the hard disk does not get recognised, you may have to seek help from Maxtor / authorised service personnel to diagonse the issue with the hard drive. Given that there is circuitry in between the actual physical disk and its USB port connector, chances are that the data on the hard disk would be safe and the intermediate circuitry may have suffered a brown-out. Good luck!
