The following procedure did not work: (1) Turned off camera. (2) Removed battery and memory stick. (3) Pushed down on power button for one minute. Tried this twice with no result. Monitor still has vertical lines on left side.

There is no firmware available for this version of the camera. I've tried everything else suggested by the first expert with no effect. Any other ideas?

Thanks for the help of both experts who helped me eliminate simple solutions. I will send the camera to an authorized dealer. I think it is still under warranty. I'm happy to have found your service since I'm a mechanical moron. I'll keep you in mind for future reference.

Hello Jim,

It could be that the screen was damaged. Was it accidentally dropped? To avoid further damage to the lcd screen, the best thing to do would be to bring this to an authorized service center.

is reset the camera. This is a fairly easy procedure which involves either going into your setup menu and choosing "reset" (or intialize), holding down the menu key for 5 seconds, or, removing the batteries for a few minutes. It may be that the firmware loading got corrupted and the camera just needs to be "rebooted," which is something that turning it on/off won't accomplish. But after which, you should have the camera reset to factory default settings.

look for firmware updates. Download and install them.

Even if this does not help then Im afraid that the display has gone bad and that we'll have to contact the manufacturer for a replacement if your camera is under warranty.

Windows XP will not recognize Cooxpix S710

Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Nikon Transfer or Picasa.

My screen only shows half of the computer and there are different colors of lines on the bottom half. i have tried rebooting my pc but it does not help at all its been like this ever since i left it open...

Sounds like the screen has gone bad.... but could be the graphics card. Try an external monitor. If the external monitor is OK, then the screen is bad. If the external monitor also bad, then the on-board graphics card is bad.

Good luck, Jim

My Nikon coolpix S710 has suddenly come up with 'Memory card is write protected and wont take pictures now. Does anyone know how to fix it?

SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

I need a master reset, hard reset, firmware reset for my Nikon S710. I try with "erase all" but configuration is not equal to the first time use my camera. I need reset my camera. Thanks.

Two methods...scroll to "reset" in the setup menu and follow the on-screen instructions. -or- Remove the card and battery...press all the buttons...leave the camera alone for 20 minutes...insert the card and then the battery...turn it on.

Right half of screen is Black with a White vertical stripe

Yeah, I have this exact same problem, except my mom slammed my laptop shut in frustration around half an hour ago, so that's why it's like this. The right half of my screen is black with two colorful stripes (mostly white), but the left half is visible. I've researched a bit and found out that this is because the LCD in your monitor has burnt out, and since you don't have a monitor to attach, the only thing you can do is to go to where you bought the laptop and either get it fixed for free or return it for a brand new one (if your warranty still stands). If not, you might as well get a new laptop. I think my warranty has expired, so I'll get a new laptop, hopefully.

Hope this helps!

Vertical lines on left half of screen

The problem is the driver tabs that go from the panel controller board to the panel itself.

This is normally a fatal failure since having it repaired is extremely expensive.
