Yes, It will charge the unit but I would leave it plugged in for about 2 days if you are going to use it when it powers up. I plugged mine in immediately after purchase and used it about 20 min later. the battery should read full charge after a day or two with continued use. Enjoy it!!

The Car chargers are generally the defective unit.
I have also faced a similar issue as the spring loaded cigarette lighter was pushing the charger causing it to disconnect.

There are 3 ways to charge your satnav. You can charge it with the car cigarette lighter socket or an optional mains charger both of which take around 4 hours. You can charge it through the USB port of your computer which takes about 8 hours. If charging with the computer both the satnav and computer should be turned on.

If charging with the car be sure that there's power going to the cigarette lighter socket. Some cars need to be running for power to reach it.

How do I charge it for the first time?

You can charge it by connecting to your cigarette lighter socket in the car for 4 hours, or you can charge it with a mains charger for 4 hours. The mains charger normally has to be bought seperately. Or you can charge it by connecting it to your computer for 8 hours with a mini SD card.

Just bought a Garmin Nuvi 1240 and it says charge for 4 hours before using. I can only see that it has a car charger so does that mean I have to leave it in the car for 4 hours charging? Or have I got to...

You can either charge it in the car for 4 hours connected to the cigarette lighter socket or you can connect it to your computer with the mini USB lead for 8 hours to charge it. There is also a mains charger which has to be bought seperately which takes 4 hours to charge it.

My cigarette lighter will not charge my TomTom

The plugs which are used with car lighters are often very poor; compare the firmness of the seating of the lighter with your accessory plug. The latter are often too loose to make decent contact.
Also, that plug is equipped with a fuse; unscrew the plug body and check the fuse.
I also recall someone having a failed plug on the Tomtom itself; it may be a weak point.

TomTom GO 910 won't turn on.

Two possibilities:
- if someone has used the wrong charger, and connected it to a 12V supply, the mainboard may be damaged. In that case, you need a replacement.
- the battery may be discharged. Even if the green light is on, it doesn't necessarily charge up. Try pushing it hard onto the mount for a few minutes, then see if it will turn on.

How can I open the luggage compartment of a Porsche 911 when the battery is dead?

The best way to do this is to put battery voltage back into the system through the cigarette lighter. You can buy a battery charger at an auto parts store or walmart that is designed to charge the battery through the cigarette lighter. It will have a plug on it that insert right into the cigarette lighter. Let it charge a little, and try the button again. It will pop right open.

Does the cigarette lighter work in the car when you press it in? Does it get hot? If not has the fuse blown for the cigarette lighter?

If that is supplying power you may have a fault in the cigarette lighter to Tom Tom lead. Carefully check the fuse (one of the six bumps) in the plug and make sure it is still intact (use a meter).

If the fuse is OK then the lead itself may be faulty and probably needs to be replaced.

Can i plug my tomtom 1 xL in to a 24v cigerate plug

Hello callan_1,

The USB car charger which TomTom makes for the One XL GPS receiver appears to support cigarette lighters with voltage from 12 to 24 volts. If you have this charger you should be able to use it power your GPS.

Best Regards,
Ken
