You will need to use an external device big enough and make sure it is formatted to FAT32 and use the backup utility.

Hi Melissa,

If you are getting the YLOD or yellow light I will run through what causes it and how you can fix it.

Causes:

The yellow light is caused by internal overheating and the main chips that take the damage are the GPU and the CPU.

You need to stop the heat build up and you will be able to get back to gaming again.

Solution:

You can either send the console back in for repair and they will fix it for you, however it will take about 4 weeks to get this done and it will cost about $150 for the repair!

Quicker Solution:

For a faster way to fix it you can use a good YLOD Repair guide that will show you with videos how to stop the heat build up and get back to gaming.

The important thing is to make sure that you get a guide that is up to the job!

I have put together a list of the best PS3 Repair guides and a complete review below:

Can anyone help. My sons ps3 died with the Ylod. Is there any way he can get all his information off his hard drive as he is going to have to buy another one. Please help

Hi,

I'm sorry to tell you that your out of luck with getting the data from the PS3's hard drive. The reasons being that if you take out the hard drive and put it in the new console it will format it, thus losing the data. Even if you were to connect the hard drive to a PC you still wouldn't be able to get the data as the drive is encrypted making it unreadable to the Windows operating system.

The only way that your going to get the data from the drive is to try and repair the yellow light of death yourself or have Sony repair the console for you.

If you think you can fix the ylod yourself or know someone who can then click on the link i have provided below for a step-by-step guide on how to repair the ylod. (video tutorials are included to make it easier)

My Ps3 will not start

Don't listen the the above guy, he's on almost every problem trying to hock some crappy guide on eBay that you can find for free.

The YLOD as its called is common among early gen PS3s, of the CECHA and CECHB series, among others. Typically its a hardware failure, and can be as simple as the hard drive is corrupt and needs reformatting, to the most common cause, and thats the solder joints underneath the processor or graphics chip has come loose due to board flexing (Similar to the most common 360 RROD problem).

Fixing it is a matter of stripping down your PS3 using one of the FREELY available tutorials online (a good video version is HERE YouTube - PS3 YLOD Fix Part 1 of 2), using a cheap heat gun to reflow the solder by heating the 2 chips up (the heatgun I'm using is 750-1000 watts and was bought at Wal-mart for $22), letting it cool 20 minutes then putting it back together. I have rescued over ten different PS3s with this method without fail.

Also be sure to check with your local Radio Shack and but Arctic Silver thermal paste to use on the chips after reflow for heatsink dissipation. A tube costs roughly $10 with tax.

PS3 hard drive transfer

seagate eSATA 250gb hard drive, the PS3 uses a laptop sata drive, how you get this to work?

You have basically have 2 options you could try:

Use Linux for retrieve the data of get the original mainboard back.

The PS3 + HDD bonds together, so if you were to save stuff eg, online purchases, you need to have the same account for max of 5 downloads to 5 differenct units, BUT you cannot just swap out the HDD and expect it to work. The PS3 has a feature to backup from internal directly to an external USB hard drive but online limited to data, most purchased movies and/or MP3 will not be transferred, it sucks.

You can have as much HDD you want but only YOU can use them , cannot be shared with another PS3. I hope that helps a bit

Playing Battlefield Bad Company PS3 Shut off only blinking red

this could be a problem with over heating of the system, the ps3 will shut its self down if it getts to hot to avoid damage to the cpu and gpu, the easyest option is to try and get a 3rd party cooler for the ps3 or if you have any tech knollage try cleaning out any dust around fans inside, this could include using a vacum cleaner to **** out the dust or a can on air duster which is a tin of air used to blow out dust ,
ether way dont open you console inless its out of warranty as opening ur ps3 will invauldate ur warranty and sony will not want to know and charge you a hefty fee

hope this helps a little cheers

this soundsl ike the prob i just had, it is due to the last 2 updates causing laser to spin too fast, and burn out. only way to fix that i know, is by ringing sony, and they will happily send u out a replacement ps3 and a coupon via email for the post office to post ur console to them. they r still covering ps3s that have just ran out of warranty too. the service from sony was wonderful.

Green Yellow Red Lights

It can be overheating but it can also occur for no reason whatsoever. I did a little reasearch and found somone that had managed to get his ps3 working by pushing down on the metal shielding in between the power supply and wifi board, I know it sounds stupid but I tried it out on a coustomer's broken ps3 with the same problem and it worked. My guess is that the spot i pushed down on has a thermal resistor underneath with a bad solder connection or somthing. Tthe only problem is to do this you must take apart your ps3. Have either of you ever taken apart a ps3? If not, you either need to take it to a repair shop or call sony and have them fix it.
