Do the fans spin? do you mean it does not power on at all? do the leds blink or light when you try to turn on the machine?

It sounds like a bad powersupply. how old is the machine?

  • Ekse Aug 01, 2009

Yes it could very likely be the powersupply, I would open up the side panel of the machine and get the dust out, disconnect the powersupply from the mainboard for a while. Plug it back in and try starting up.

always unplug the machine before working inside.

If you have another powersupply around I would test the machine with another powersupply.

I think this is a normal ATX powersupply, which will cost around 20 to 40 usd.
    check on

ATX powersupply 300 - 500W will do fine for you, depending on what kind of powersupply is installed now. the W reads on the Side.

Standby light on my dimension is blinking amber and will not boot up. Nothing will run. Any ideas as to what may be wrong. I'm thinking either a power supply or possibly a HD failure.

Definitely not a hard drive problem. It would boot, but not go to windows. This is one of two things. Power supply failure (most likely), or one of the RAM sticks went bad. I would try testing the RAM by taking one out, and trying to turn it on. Do this with both, or all four (depending on how many you have). If it still doesn't work, I would think that the Power Supply is the issue.

Dell has a set of codes that would tell you what the exact error would be based on the blinks of the amber light. If you find the pattern, you can look that up. In my professional experience it's normally the power supply.

Dell 4700c will not power on white light on motherboard

Is there any chance for you to check if the power supply blows air from inside of the power supply? If yes, on your motherboard, do disconnect the P1 cable or the main power supply cable that connects to the motherboard and the P2 cable which. and try to plug the power cord of the power supply and if the fan did not spin, power supply is the one causing the problem

You may also try to remove the RAM or memory card module from the motherboard and all of the PCI card connected to the motherboard. Try to turn on the system and check the power supply fan and the CPU fan if it will spin. If not then I recommend you to replace the power supply.

On the other hand, if the fan is spinning on the power supply after you remove all the RAM and PCI cards. And the power button light is flashing amber or solid amber color. Try to install RAM 1 by 1 to isolate the problem.

Let me know if the problem persist

Solid Amber light when starting the Inspiron 530 . Every time i start the Dell inspiron 530, the solid amber light comes on and it dont start. As per Dell user manual i have tried everything but of no use....

Amber led simplifies a start-up-error. This could be a number of things.

For example:

Check if HDD is connected properly

Check if RAM is connected properly / also if this is damaged your pc wont start.

Check your m/board for any loose capacitors an if they are not popped at the top.

Your LCD screen is properly plugged in to the m/board and if the cables aren't damaged they are very thin and fragile.
also could be the power supply...

Dell 4700C randomly goes into "sleep mode" and doesn't wake up.

Honestly, my first suggestion would have been to upgrade your memory. If you go into control panel and check your power settings (I'm assuming you're on windows XP) Do you have all of you options set to "Never"? You may also want to check your BIOS settings to see how your sleep/hibernate is set up. Aside from that, you'd have to run some hardware diagnostics to give a better idea of what to look for. Hope this helps!
