When I go to turn the PS3 on, the light goes on but then it goes back to a blinking red light and beeps and just repeats this process.

The blinking red light on PS3 is known to occur when something as simple as a misplaced connection occurs. It could also mean that the PS3's hard drive is malfunctioning or not functioning at all. You can take the following steps to identify and perhaps correct the problem. Check to ensure that all cables are properly and securely connected. If this doesn't solve the problem, try reinstalling the hard drive as indicated below.

Physically remove the hard drive from the PS3 console. Dust off the connectors, and gently and carefully replace it into the PS3. Very often this simple removal and replacement will fix the blinking red light problem. It may be necessary to remove and replace the hard drive several times.

If this does not work the blinking red light can only be inicative of a chronic overheating problem and will nead to be sent to sony for repairs.

Hope this helps

When turning on system, green light comes on then changes to red, and blinks. no system activity

Hi Tom, what you have on your console is the blinking/flashing red light error. There are a few different things you can try in order to get rid of this problem, so I will try and walk you through them as easily as possible:

  1. With your PS3 console switched off, open the hard drive slot on the side of your console, then remove the drive. Put the drive back in your console, then restart your machine. See if this has fixed the problem (check the video below for how to remove it safely)
  2. If you are able to place your console in stand-by mode then hold your finger on the touch power button until you hear three beeps, continue to hold the button down until you hear three further beeps (two of these will be very short) This is like a "hard reset" for your PS3, and if it has worked successfully a menu will display on screen with 6 options. Try #5 "Restore PS3 System", although you may lose your saved games etc. Please note that you may not be able to access this screen at all.
  3. Do you have a current warranty on your PS3? if so Sony will fix it for free, simply look on the Sony website, or in your owners manual, for the number you need to contact. If you don't have a warranty they will charge you $150 for the repairs however.
  4. Watch the series of videos on red/yellow light repair on Youtube. The first part is linked below for your convenience:

My playstation will turn on, then turn off 10 seconds after i turn it on, then the red light flashes, i thought it was overheating, so i left it sitting for a while with no cords plugged in it. what is the...

Hi, you may try the recovery options: The PS3 stores a copy of firmware drivers on the hard-drive and will reload any corrupt files. To access the recovery menu, do this: Make sure the PS3 is turned off Press and hold the power button on the PS3 it will power on then power off. When it's off press and hold the power button again until you hear two consecutive beeps. When you hear the double beeps immediately take your finger off the power button (if your system turns off before you get a double beep just try again and hold the button, it should double beep the 2nd time you try) It will ask for the controller to be connected via the USB cable, Turn on the controller and you will have access to the menu. Be aware that you might lose all of your previously saved data.
This should work only if you didn't see a yellow led light, before the red blinking. If the recovery doesn't work and/or if you've seen the yellow light then you have to call sony technical support. Regards, Peter

System freezes

HI. If this is being accompanied by a blinking red light, this will lead to GPU solder separation. Due to the poor design of the heat-sink/fan assembly, this condition is quite common in most PS3 consoles. Now, if your unit only freezes up during game play, or system activity(with no blinking red light), the Hard drive will then be the culprit. It is damaged. The necessary action will be to have the Hard drive replaced, asap.

  • NOTE_ Most GPU issues will need to be repaired by a qualified Sony service tech.

I downloaded playstation home, but when I try to log onto it, it goes onto the loading screen, then auto-shuts off my ps3 system. it beeps three times then my power lighting is the just blinking red...what...

take out the hard drive and then put it back into the ps3. Then turn the system back on and see if the red light goes away.

If the red light is still coming on then that means the hard drive is bad and would need to be replaced.

Ps3 freezes and turns off

Most of the times, it is a problem of connection with your hard drive or the hard drive itself is broken. You can quickly fix the PS3 by carefully re-setting the drive.

In order to do this, you need to take out the hard drive and then once out, replace inside the PS3 the same way. Usually this is the answer to the Ps3 blinking red light problem. If the red light does not go away by applying thus method, you will have to get a new drive

the next you can follow if this does not work, in case you do not want to buy a new drive

To do it, when PS3 is on standby, hold the power button until you hear 2 beeps.

If it does go onto the video output screen, turn it off again using the
power button and once its back on standby, try holding the power again
until you hear the double beep.

Check if you see this screen and try to do a system restore (note: you will lose your profile data here, since currently you do not have option to take a backup)

else a better option could be to give the ps3 console to Sony for servicing in case you are under warranty period, however they would not repair your device and send it back to you, they send you a refurbished device in replacement to your console

Carried out an update, but now stuck in loop

Procedure for Entering Safe mode when PS3 is caught in update loop:

When you first turn on the PS3, it will not allow you to go into Safe mode. You must prepare it for this.

link for flash drive prep:
http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/SystemUpdates/PS3/pc_update.html#update_PC

(This will not work for the drive that currently is caught in the update loop. You must take the hard drive out of the PS3 and temporarily replace it with another 2.5” SATA drive. Note: temp drive may need to be initialized… Connect drive to pc, right click on My Computer and select Manage… Then select disk Management… you will then be presented with a dialogue box that will assist in initializing the disk.. However, only initialize it… Do Not Format it!(waste of time) Once the disk is initialized disconnect it from external enclosure or shut down computer and remove disk)

From the top:

1.) Plug in PS3 and flip switch in back of PS3 to on. Red LED in front of PS3 should light up. Also, plug in Controller at this point.
2.) Hold finger to I/O button on front of PS3 – Green LED lights up
a. You will hear one beep, then another single beep, then a final beep and the PS3 will power off again and Red LED will be on
3.) Hold finger to I/O button on front of PS3 – Green LED lights up
a. You will hear one beep, then another single beep, then two beeps
4.) As soon as you hear the two beeps, hold PS button on Controller
a. You will then be presented with an options screen
i. Restart System -- leads back to update loop
ii. Restore Default Settings --
iii. Restore File System -- leads back to update loop (8002F14E)
iv. Rebuild Database --
v. Restore PS3 System --
vi. System Update -- will cause error
5.) You will then remove the temporary SATA drive from the PS3 and replace it with the hard drive that is caught in the update loo
6.) I am currently stuck attempting to Restore Default Settings and Im sure it will end in error, but i have to try all possible solutions.

Blinking red light

General hardware failure. Usually the red light means either bad power supply or bad hard drive.

You can start by pulling the hard drive out and then power on the system.

More than likely it's a power supply / motherboard issue, in which case you'll have to contact Sony for repair.

You can reach them @ 1-800-345-SONY

PS 3 Won't turn on blinking light

Are you trying to turn the PS3 on via bluetooth controller? If so, attempted to turn PS3 on from console itself. Sometimes the controller will get out of sync with the system and not allow for turning on remotely.
