Question about Pioneer SD-582HD5 58" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television
A common failure with these symptoms in the SD582HD5 is the SMPS module (switch mode power supply). The supply can be removed and what you'll find are ring cracks, together with some possible component failures are causing you the symptoms you're describing.
Reflow solder on all the pin connections and heat sinked components. Test fuses F201 (6.3a) & F202 (5a) for open and replace if necessary. This should restore normal power-up but you may still have a problem with convergence. When the SMPS fails in these units they usually go in a surge. The greatest weakness in these sets is the convergence circuit. And it is possible that the SMPS could cause failure of the convergence amps. If this happens you'll have to replace he amps also. This unit takes two STK392-110's but I recommend you replace them with STK392-150's for greater reliability. However, test the convergence after the SMPS repair and see if it's even necessary.
