Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Same problem with the WD250.

I have the same problem with the 250Gb model. Only thing I noticed that works is to let windows boot-up all the way then plug it in.

My windows PC is not working.

This statement leaves a lot to be desired. What manufacturer and model PC is it? When you say not starting, are you saying that it won't power up, or that it won't POST, or that it POSTs but won't boot, or it boots, but won't bring up the OS? What does it do, and what doesn't it do? And what are you seeing at the time you determine that it isn't working? All these things help us to figure out what the issue is and how to assist you in rectifying it.

Partition 320gb hard disk xp

If you remove the hard drive from the computer and convert it into a desktop hard drive you would have to go into the bios settings and change the boot-up order from dvd or hard drive to usb. Check first that your computer can actually BOOT from usb (look in the bios settings to see if this option is listed). Depending on the age of the computer you may not have the boot from usb option.
I don't use Mac. Never used one. However, I do use Linux. On a partitioned hard drive Linux can 'see' into Windows and you can transfer things from Windows into Linux. However, Windows can't 'see' into Linux at all. Windows knows that the linux partition is there but just can't access it. This is normal.
It would appear that your computer is more or less doing the same, for whatever reason, even though it was working fine a while ago.
Maybe Linux would be able to access the Mac side of things in your computer? I don't honestly know. But it would be able to access the Windows 7 side of things. Why not try a 4th partition with Linux on?
Linux Ubuntu is a free download. Download the image, burn it to dvd and then restart your computer. It will give you the option of either using the entire hard drive for installation, or putting it in its own partition. You can also install Ubuntu on a usb pen and boot your computer from that (if you have the boot from usb in your bios settings). More information and download is available at http://www.cavalrystorage.com/download.aspx
It may be the actual usb port that is worn, not the cable. The front ports on my desktop are so worn as to be unuseable

Windows unable to complete format.

How did you format the computer, inside windows or outside?
Try this change the boot sequence from the BIOS instead of booting first to HD make your optical drive as first boot. After changing the boos sequence insert the windows vista disk to the drive then restart the computer. When it boots it will ask you to press any key to boot to CD/DVD. Keep tapping on space bar. If you notice it will say windows copying files. When copying files completed we isolated the problem dvd rom is fine and the vista installer is fine as well.
If the problem only started in or during attempting to format you HDD might causes the problem.

Acer 5570 stripes in the bios, blue screen, not booting...

Try removing one memory module then boot again and see if the same thing happens. If it does swap it out with the other one and reboot again. If this solves your problem one of your ram modules is bad and requires replacement.

Laptop will not boot after vrus warning.

try booting into safe mode? on a pc hit F8 repeatedly while you boot until you get a boot screen with the safe mode option. Some laptops have differant keys, eg F2, <Del>, F10, but ussualy they state this when it boots up.

when you get into safe mode, go to your run prompt and type "msconfig" hit enter. got to startup, disable all.Go to services, disable all. reboot. if this works, try running an pdated antivirus scan. I recommend using Avast! which is like AVG. It can do a start up scan. also try running something like 'trojan remover' which is free to download.

Good luck! :)

The laptop doesn't boot up always.

I would try the following:
1. Remove the battery completely. If the computer boots properly several times in a row, then the battery may be causing the power supply to do strange things.
2. If you have experience removing laptop components, try removing the hard drive. Because you say the screen goes black (I assume the system powers off) sometimes after the HP logo, I doubt its Windows or a software issue.
3. If HP has a diagnostic CD you can boot to, try that.
4. It may be the power supply acting up. If it charges the battery, and if you can boot to Windows with the battery, try getting a new power supply.
5. Otherwise, it may be the motherboard of the laptop.
