Always thread the machine with the presser foot up. This keeps the tension disks open while you are threading. Open the lid on top. Put thread on spool holder. Go directly to your left and down the path on the farthest left. Go all the way to the bottom and bring the thread up on the path closer to the spool. Hook the thread through the metal piece that moves up and down while sewing. It should be in the highest position when threading. Run the thread down and clip into the small metal holder above the needle. Pull down needle threader, draw thread across front of it from left to right and pull through needle.

Probably because the design is too close to the hoop size. There needs to be some space around the edge to allow for the presser foot without hitting the hoop.
