That old system runs off a spark advance and point system. It'll be located under the flywheel. Clean the magneto where it comes up to the flywheel, the spacing can be set with an old cardboard loose leaf (school scribbler) cover . To remove the fly wheel you will need to take the pull cord off , unscrew the big but in the middle of the flywheel and get a flywheel puller. Under the flywheel you'll find a point system . Either try cleaning the contacts with sand paper or purchase a new point /condenser kit . ( usually the setting for spacing the points is 2 sheets of loose leaf paper between the point contact and condenser.

1974 70hp Johnson outboard,hi there I was coming back from fishing when my motor just stopped it had been running fone before this happened. I tried to start it but would not fire had plenty of gas in...

Check the ignition system, check for spark at the plug, if it has no spark check your points, ignition coil, etc. If it has spark you need to check the fuel system so that's gonna boil down to an obstructed fuel line, a clogged fuel filler, or something in the carburetor(s). That should lead you to figuring it out my friend, best of luck. It's always either air, fuel, or spark! If one or more of the 3 are missing it'll never run(not right if it does), those basics always apply to an internal combustion engine of any age or size, whether carbureted or fuel injected. Thanks and Best of Luck

IF this is a 50 Hp Johnson marine motor, you may have a problem with the flywheel magnet or the stator coil that is under it.

8 HP Johnson outboard has no fire on either cylinder it would rum yesterday, no fire today.

Assuming you have compression in cylinders, it's either fuel or spark. Smell gas? If so it's flooded, Try starting w/o choke. Wait ten minutes and try again. Next check and examine the spark plugs. Best to change them. Are they wet? If so you are getting fuel. Then it's spark. May need service for that unless you are a mechanic.

I have a 1971 85 hp joahnson outboard that is getting fuel but no spark from the plugs it cranks over but no spark... any ideas???

What you have is a bunch of parts that you need. There are very few repair shops that would consider the repair. Being an employee many years ago of such parts....Try googling, Antique motor parts/ johnson. or elaborate as OMC / Evinrude/Johnson. You can still find a parts guy that can help you (very rare) search the web and hope it turnes out Okay! BeeCee

I have a 1978 70 hp johnson with the spark plugs out the motor spins freely with spark plugs in the motor is hard to crank, and sounds like it binding

Hi, with your spark plugs in you are turning the engine over against compression, thats why its harder to turn. The binding noise could be your piston rings, buts its difficult to say without further information. Sorry

Stick with the NGK or try a Champion. A Johnson outboard is the only brand motor that will perform well with something besides a NGK.

check for spark against the block. they sell a test kit, i think harbor freight sells one, where you hook it in line and should be able to see if it is firing or not.
