The Sharp e1 problem is a timer that is pretending to demand that you clean the filter. It stops the machine every 720 hours and forces you to do a procedure to get it to go away.
There are 2 possible procedures.
1) Unplug the machine. Hold down the power button while you plug the machine in and wait for a beep about 5 seconds long. Let go of the power button. Unplug the machine. Plug it back in.
2) Unplug the machine. Hold down the mode button while plugging the machine back in and waiting for a beep of about 3 seconds duration. Let go of the mode button. The machine will start. Turn the machine off by pressing the power button. Resume trying to use the machine normally.
If these don't work, the "demand to clean filter" timer is broken and you will need to buy parts to repair the machine.
(Don't you just love having a computer chip in every appliance?)

Search for this problem on web or contact Sharp Technical Support for the following procedure:
1. Unplug unit.
2. Hold down power button while plugging in unit. It will do a short self-test and then beep. leaving unit off.
3. Release power button and unplug.
4. Plug in again and turn on normally. This should last for about 720 hours, at which point the E1 error will come back and you need to follow the procedure again. (You might as well clean the air filter at this point just in case it really needed it...)

If your a/c unit is portable, and E1 code most always is "air filter cleaning time" or" water level to high ".
To reset air filter interval turn unit off at power switch then unplug.Hold power switch down while plugging in....unit will go through a short self check then beep.Release power button after beep.Unit should now be reset.
To reset water level....just drain some.....not all.
Most portables use water for increase cooling......so leave some in.

You will want to remove the panel in front of the air handler, usually a few 5/16 screws.
Once open then with a flashlight look down inside where the water collects in the condensate drain pan.
Verify that the pan is not full of water or algae build up.
If it is, then attach a wet vac to your drain outside and while it is pulling on the drain line spray some water inside till it is fully clean.
If it is not full of water then check the pvc pipes that are attached to the drain pan, they may have came loose and may need to be teflon taped and reconnected to the pan. Also verify there are no cracks in the pan.
Lastly inspect the bottom of the evaporator coil (Not the top) pull out the filter and make sure the coil is clean or water could drip down past the pan into your dwelling. Make sure as well that the insulation on your panel that covers the unit is intact and not worn away.
Good Luck!
