Hello Larry Reese,

I typically recommend going everywhere ELSE...
but at times like these... SEARspartsdirect might
be the obvious choice... (?).

SOURCE: 2005 model Murray 42 " cut with 15 hp OHV engine.

Oh yes they were right !! This happened to my unit last summer, those intake and exhaust have to at least checked every time you tune up so for most that is a seasonal check to keep everything in check. The magnet inside mine got ripped off the inside wall of starter casing. Go to smalleng.com they have a video for this and all you have to do is find out the gap numbers, that local repair shop of yours will be happy to give you those numbers. Now get er done!! Good Luck....

Testimonial: " I am used to the old type engines and never thought of adjusting valves. The repair shop said the would do it for $32.50 and show me how. Thanks ;-)"

SOURCE: how to adjust the valves

Here is one solution for doing it and I will repeat with the Briggs suggested maintenance procedure.

http://pkjones.hubpages.com/hub/Hard-to-start-Briggs-and-Stratton-engine

Scroll down to ADJUSTING OVERHEAD VALVES.
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/engines/support/frequently-asked-questions/Servicing%20the%20valves/

Remember, proper setting of the overhead valves is important to insure that the ACR (automatic compression release) system operates correctly enabling a much easier start. Good luck.

How to replace ohv cam on 17.5 briggs model 31c707-1346-b2

I SET THE INTAKE VALVE AT .005 AND THE EXHAUST VALVE AT .003 AND THE EXHAUST VALVE MOVES ONLY HALF THE DISTANCE OF THE INTAKE. IT IDLES OK BUT GIVE IT SOME GAS AND IT BACKFIRES THROUGH THE CARBURATER AND SHUTS DOWN.

Craftsman 42in. rider with a kohler 17.5 Was running great, but last time i tried to crank, wouldnt get above a low idle. Now just backfires threw carb. Plug is fireing, compression is 92lbs., getting...

Try adjusting the Intake and Exhaust Valves if this engine is the OHV model. I am also concerned about fuel flow and trash in the carburetor. This machine needs a fuel filter . It also needs a fuel-shutoff valve so that if the needle valve in the carburetor sticks open or gets trash in it to hold it open, it does NOT let all the gas in the tank drain in and overflow into the engines crankcase. I would also drain the fuel, and check the float bowl for water/sediment and debris. If you find that stuff in there, clean it out, and the rest of the carb should be removed and cleaned also.

Need to find out how to adjust vavles

If your engine is an overhead valve Briggs. You need to:
Remove valve cover
Locate rocker arms. Upper is exhaust, Lower is intake.
Loosen the lock screw in the center of the adjusting nut.
With engine at TDC and both valves closed adjust both valves by turning the adjusting nut to obtain proper clearance. Once set, tighten the center lock screw.
Valve adjustment specifications vary from model to model. Would need more engine information to get you that or it can be found online.
Reinstall valve cover, make sure gasket did not get damaged.
Adjust valves on a "cold" engine.

Briggs and Stratton OHV V-Twin 24hp repetitive valve adjustment

Try pulling out the choke a little, if it stops backfiring the mixture is too lean, check the intake
pipes at the cyl head and also the plastic runners to the carb for leaks.
