Needs to be lubricated and used more often.
Unplug machine.
Dial ZZ stitch and move the needle arm Left & Right manually. It is probably stiff, the spring allows it to return, but is sluggish.
Metholated spirits in the region of the needle swing, perhaps several applications and the lubricate....if this fails, take it for professional advice and get a quote.

Straight stitch

Tension knob on any machine will be in the thread path and usually above the needle somewhere, while the stitch width and length knobs are usually on the right side of the machine. I cant identify your model but on any machine straight stitch is usually a length of 2.5 and width of 0, while a zigzag the width will be set somewhere between 2-4 depending on how wide you need it to be. There is usually a stitch selector of some sort too but many machines, providing the width is set to 0, you will get a straight stitch.

Stitch selection does not work

The switch could be bad or the mechanics that physically move the needle for the zig zag could be broken/worn. Hope you get it fixed soon!

I don't have a manual for a Husqvarna 6440 and don't know how to switch from zigzag to straight stitch. Everything else seems to be sewing beautifully and it was on straight stitch when I first tried it. I...

You have 3 knobs/dials on the machine, the top left dials the stitch, the top right sets the length and the bottom right set your width. set it 0 for straight.

I can't get my Pfaff 230a to straight stitch!

The stitch selector switch is most likely the culprit. Have you tried operating the machine upside down?

Stitching won't stay in place

upper thread tension may be too loose
needle may have a slight bend in it
may need cleaning use canned air to blow out lintmaybe take in to a repair shop and have them check it out and show you about the cleaning process.
