Assuming that all your cartridges are clean. Then the next step is remove your print head and clean it. If you haven't done this before, it is very easy. First printer's remove your cartridges and life the lever on the upper right hand side of the print head. If you have done this, skip the next paragraph.

Gently remove the print head and put it in a container, and fill it with hot water. I usualy empty the contents of a small bottle of ink jet cartridge cleaner into the tub as well. You should see the ink literally seep out of your print head. It's best to leave it for a few hours, but if you can't wait, leave it for several minutes, and gently press a folded paper towel against the print head base. It should make a clean impression. Dry it and put it back in your printer. Test print.

If your inks are clean, and you have cleaned the head. It's unlikely, but there is an outside chance that the contacts at the back of the print head carriage could be dirty. Gently clean them with a cotton bud dipped in ink jet cleaning fluid.

If it still dosen't work, then it looks likely that your print head is damaged and will need to be replaced. You can buy replacement print heads on the internet for about £50 pounds. (UK)

However, with the price of printers falling, it might be better to cut your losses and buy a new printer. I would pay a bit more and go for the Canon IP4600 which is the nearest replacement model to the IP3000. It also has separate ink tanks and significantly a removable print head. The down side is that the inks are chipped, so if you plan to refill them, you will need to plan to buy a Canon cartridge ink resetter to keep your printer happy. (About £20)

Hope it helps.

I think that the Canon printers require the colour cartridge to be full so as to print B&W. In Some makes like epson it is possible to continue printing in B&W even if the colour ink is down.
Open properties of the printer and check to see the tools provided, if there is any link to cut off the colour inks .
Just my tip

Failure to print from computer in colour

I have a similiar issue that just started happening recently - the printer shows FULL inks but the PC thinks it has empty inks. I tried the * #, 123 reset hardware failures, but that didnt help. Printer run self diagnostics says all is fine....

I am using USB connections - and this has been fine for years, until now. Maybe a microsoft patch issue?

Colour Ink Jet Cartridges emptying during a black ink print run

Hi,
If you go to your printer properties, there should be a setting whereby you have to select the option to "PRINT USING BLACK CARTRIDGE ONLY". Make sure this option is selected, otherwise your printer will use ALL colors even if you only print black.
Let me know if you need any further assistance.
Best wishes,
Graemevm

Why is it that my printer won't work if one ink cartridge is empt

Hi, this is not a solution because I don't think there is one apart from buying new inks. Epson and all other inkjet printers do this to prevent the coloured print head nozzles from getting blocked. If they are not used for a long time the ink dries up and blocks the nozzles. Epson recommends printing at least once a month with all colours to prevent this. Whenever the printer is turned on it performs a head clean, this is why the coloured inks get used over time even though they are not used for printing.

Hi there. The reason for your problem is that the colour cartridge contains cyan, magenta and yellow ink, plus a black cartridge of course. All the other myriad colours are produced by mixing these four basic colours. So, if you print red, it requires ink from both the magenta and yellow cartridges. Thus if your red produces a yellow print, it means your magenta is not printing. This can be due to a number of reasons, mainly an empty or faulty magenta cartridge or blocked magenta print nozzles.

If you wish me to help you with sorting out the lack of magenta, please post a new comment to this effect.
