Question about Toshiba TN61X81 61" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

My TN55X81 is showing the same problem.

It started as a convergence problem 3 months ago. I replaced the two convergence IC's (STK392-110) with Sanyo STK394-160. That fixed the convergence problem. After that, I saw this problem of blinking power light a couple of times and got it powered up after unplugging/replugging the power supply.

Then this problem appeared again a few days ago, and unplugging/replugging of power won't work any more (left power disconnected for hours before replugging). I did this test that seems to indicate a problem with the convergence board: unplugged all connectors (seven for my TN55X81) from the convergence board (PB8923) and turned on power. The TV would then turn on, with convergence way off (which is expected as PB8923 was disconnected).

This test ruled out fuses. I checked PB8923 and saw no open resistors. I don't know if the convergnece IC's have gone bad again and even if they did, if that could have caused the blinking power light problem. Some web postings suggested the TV shuts down power right after it attempts to turn on the TV (hence two clicks instead of one after the power was turned on), and decribed this as the TV getting to some protected mode when it detects some problem such as shorting somewhere.

I am debating whether I should try replacing convergence IC's again, and if I do, whether I try STK392-110 or STK394-160. Some postings suggested STK394-160 as a better replacement for STK392-110.

Sparko1, thanks for the suggestion. Your suggeston directed my attention to the IC's, and I double-checked and saw one of the pin's disconnected at the soldered point from the board. I resoldered it and that fixed the problem.

This was probably what happened: when I first relaced the IC's, this pin was not firmly soldered, and its tension along with heat forced a disconnection, and initially shutting down and letting it cool down allowed the metal to contract and the soldered point to reconnect. Then it happened again and again until the soldered point would not get reconnected after cooling down.

Replace the IC's with STK 392-110T.
Toshiba has a Service Bulletin on this problem.

My tv is a magnavox and we bought it about 3 years ago and it is now showing like a double picture the color is hazy and pinkish looking the model is 51MP392H/17

The problem of your unit is the convergence. Try to adjust it using the original remote control in the setting menu, then goto the convergence section adjust the red and blue convergence, you should move red and blue UP, DOWN and LEFT or RIGHT, if you cannot move them far enough the convergence IC is defective, replacing this IC will restore the original setting of your tv. This convergence IC is attach to a large aluminum plate it is the heat sink this IC has a marking of STK-#### followed by numbers, remember be careful when replacing this IC you may accidentally tampered or damage the PCB and cause much damage to your unit. Or you can contact a technician to do it for you and save you from stress good day and best regards. Try to check this link for the convergence http://www.google.com.ph/search?q=convergence+ic&hl=tl&sa=X&tbm=isch&prmd=ivns&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&biw=798&bih=472&ech=1&psi=JZdtTvDCPIe4iAe72sTABA.1315804977740.3&emsg=NCSR&noj=1&ei=MpdtTpa4OKKSiQfBpcjGBA

How to reset convergence? on mitsubishi ws 55511, has a shadow colored blue or yellow

There is an option in the user menu on the tv. Using either the remote or control panel on the front of the tv, press MENU then select SETUP. After you choose SETUP go to the 3rd column with the 3 icons. Here you can adjust the red or blue color or reset the convergence back to factory default.

After a few years the set will begin to show increasing problems with the convergence settings. When you can no longer adjust either red or blue horizontally or vertically an IC replacement will be needed. Your set uses (1) SANYO stk393-110 and you want to make sure it's SANYO and not a knock off brand as those usually fail prematurely.

Excelent description, whats happening is your set starts to show a blue convergence problem and is only correctable by replacing the blue convergence amplifier IC,the set has 3,one for each color, not all of them develope problems but they all develope loose conections, after the IC has been replaced there are adjustments to do.If you are familiar with tv service this information will give a place to start but if you are not too familar be safe and call a servicer to help you.Lets US know how it goes.
