Engine does not start. Starter & solenoid work fine. Checked air filter, fuel filter, fuel level, level in choke position. Plug is kind of flooded. Increased plug gap slightly. There is no spark....

Most small engines use a flywheel with a magnet embedded in it and an ignition coil with a core that sits a few thousandths away from the flywheel. Ignition coils are common failures probably because they come from our wonderful Chinese friends. They have demolished all US manufacturers. If you replace the coil, use some gauge to measure the gap between coil core and the flywheel magnet surface before removing the old coil. Otherwise you may spend a little time using trial & error to get the engine running again.
If your engine is a Briggs and Stratton, you can find very complete maintenance downloadable information on their website. This will pertain to the engine only, not the mower.
Dunno about Tecumseh, haven't had much need for service info on those.

I have a murray 17.5 hp 42 inch cut riding lawn mower. The engine is a 17.5 Tecumseh o/h valve. It seems it is not getting fire. I replaced the spark plug and tried holding the plug close to the engine...

Had the same problem and it turned out to be a fried coil. You need to remove the engine top cowling to get to this. On mine, a mouse had built a nest all around my coil (Very common) and, come summer when I used the mower, it toasted the coil. Just a thought. Good luck!

I have a Toro Super Recycler Mdl 20033 ser 230000001 and up. Lawn mower will not start, there is no spark. New spark plug and fuel line. Change the magneto? Is this simple?

You may not need to change the ignition module. The "air-gap" on it may just need to be adjusted. That is, the distance between the pickup legs of the ignition module and the magnets integrated into the flywheel. You would have to remove the exterior cover and any sheet metal cowling (directs air flow off the flywheel around the engines cylinder). Then, the coil and flywheel should be visible. I use a standard business card as a gauge. Slide it between the coil legs and the magnet area of the flywheel. You should feel just a slight little rub. If it won't slide or the gap is large, no spark will be produced. You will have to loosen the screws holding the coil in place, double up the card. let the magnets pull the legs in against the card with magnets behind and retighten. Then recheck for spark. Post back if needed.

I need to know what number spark plug for a Murray model # 425613x8a.

Hi iwl3792,
I will try to help you out. This riding mower has a Tecumseh engine and the recommended spark plug is a Champion L82C or equivalent. The electrode gap should be 0.030 inch (0.76 mm) for all models. I hope this is helpful. Regards and good luck. Denis.

Was cutting grassstopped for maybe three minuts then tried to start mower but it wouldnt . Refueld and a new plug got nothing but tired of pulling any suggestions

check for spark...if the mower runs for three minutes it might be failing because it looses spark as soon as the ignition module heats up.

If your mower cuts out and the spark check indicate no spark then you know you need a new module. While you are changing the module you can check for animal nesting in the cooling fins under the motor cover.
Its usually how lawn mower ignitions get baked in the first place. You cant see it from the outside....so you cant fault yourself for missing it.

good luck and be careful!

My mtd tradesman lawn mower does not run smooth. where is the idle mixture adj. screw? the engine is the tecumseh 5.5 hp model #VLV55 501029A(D)

The newer machines do not have a way for you to adjust the Idle, what you can do is change the spark plug or spray some carb cleaner or remove the air filter and run it for a few minutes without the air filter and see what happens
