My Sony Vaio Laptop just shows a black screen with a small flashing cursor in the top right corner whenever I switch on and try to boot up. It doesn't do anything else even if I leave it on for several minutes. I was recently defragmenting the hard disk and it locked up for hours after which I had to switch it off and it's been like this since. I believe that I need to get hold of a Sony recovery disk but I can't seem to find one on the Internet. Can anyone tell me where I might be able to either download one or buy one please? Thanks - Johnny

- Thanks for your response Aballejun. I didn't explain the symptoms very well when I wrote that I only had a blank screen at boot up. What I meant was that it eventually ended up that way, but I do get the Sony banner and I can press F2 at that time to get into the BIOS screen and make changes in the BIOS menus if I want to. The problem comes after this when I either don't press F2 to start with, or I exit the BIOS if I have gone into it. It is then that the screen clears and goes black with the small white flashing cursor in the left hand top corner. If I boot up from floppy or CD with something like Winternals ERD, I can see the hard drive partitions and can explore the files and folders without a problem. It is only when I need to boot from the hard disk that the problem occurs.

If your BIOS loads properly you have some display in your screen like text. But when you turn on and nothing readable on the display then you have problem in the BIOS. Try to flush updated bios in sony website. Recovery disk is only applicable if the system will display "Cannot find boot disk" or bios is properly loaded before you can boot from CD. If you wish you can boot it with Norton Ghost 12 Recovery Disk.

- Hello John, sorry for the late reply. Your problem is in MBR of your hard disk drive. To fix it you need to format and hard disk and install your OS. If you have recovery disk you can boot from it, back up your important files first.
