Could be anything from a broken clutch to a broken drive shaft. I once had a customer with that trouble and the outer cv joint and drive shaft had lost all it's splines.
Another customer had an engine mounting break allowing the power unit to drop far enough to disengage a drive shaft from the transmission..

Only checking will reveal the problem...

Testimonial: "was able to drive until i smelt clutch fluid adjusted cable but nothing, can start the van in gear but with no juddering"

With a cable clutch there is no hydraulic fluid to smell, however a slipping and overheated clutch does produce a very strong acrid smell. I expect there is little wrong other than a plain old-fashioned worn out clutch.

Even I had this problem. After sometime engaging gear was difficult. There are two reasons. First, it could be leakage of servo fuel/brake fluid from the master cylinder on the clutch side or it could be due to the wear of the pressure plate.

I have a 2008 Fiat Ducato that I can't get out of reverse, any ideas were I can start looking

is this a stick shifted manual transmission with foot clutch pedal>?
only clue here is gearbox oil (lube is better word as in GL3 or GL4 lube)
white is water ingress, never good that. A.K.A, milky
stuck in reverse any m/T box the 2 top causes;.
CLUTCH not stuck enaged , and dead, and MC and slave cylinder is dray and leaking and Resevor not dry.
to get neutral on any dead clutch simple release all brakes
then 1 person at the stick (no hills, please and no curbs and rocks under tires (tyre./) have person too wiggle car forward and back;
jog the car body and BAM the shifter gain NETURAL
great to know this act, for pre setup towing

if clutch is good it will shift all gears. and N.
but not if RAILS are jammed
or forks on the Fails melted to the gear slinders.
and last bad bearing, anywhere inside for sure siezed or so loose gears jam hard.
fixed many a box me, mosty used 2 used boxes to make one good own and then all new bearings (a kit)

Thanks for the answer Vernon if the gauge is fluctuating can I still go long distances driving or will the engine overheat on the Fiat ducato

While I don't personally know the Fiat Ducato all that well. Typically when this happens with a car (any car), it is not a good idea to drive long distances with it. You should have the car repaired before it really over heats and suffer catastrophic failure

Looking for a 1988 fiat ducato hymer motorhome manual. can you help thanks Ken

I think you will need a Haynes type manual for the Fiat element of the vehicle and some separate publication from Hymer for the motorhome part.

The gears crunch when changing up or down, also in reverse. Sometimes I have to use force to get it into gear properly. Would I need a new gearbox? Or could the problem be clutch related?

needs a new clutch ,its grabbing and not clearing properly ,do not use force to change gear as these vehicle dont like it the syncros break ,stop engine put in gear clutch down then start engine Cannot really answer the wear in the gearbox question without a drive though but from what you descibe i would say clutch but it could the syncros but not on all gears ,normally second goes then thrid and fourth then finally first .best bet is to get a local mechanic to have a drive and then post what he says on here by answering my reply then i will get it .
