This may sound stupid but are you printing on the correct side?
Sorry for this but that is all I can think of besides replacing unit.

See in printer properties you can set for poor paper qualty like blotter paper quality,, this will use less ink flow and less likely to bleed

New cartidge now printing light. Also message states cartridge alignment fails. Please help. Thanks, John

What you could try is to do a Clean the Print Cartridges operation. This process will clean the cartridge printhead and will print a better alignment page.

The preview colors do not match the actual print.

This is usually a cartridge issue. If that doesn't work, then try cleaning the printer head. Make sure that there is paper in the input tray. On the product control panel display, touch the tools icon. Touch Tools and then touch Clean Printhead . The product calibrates, cleans, and aligns the printhead and then prints a test page. If reprinting did not help, try increasing the print quality mode.
In the application you are printing from, click File, and then click Print. Make sure the printer is selected, and then click Properties.
Select the Paper/Quality tab. In the Print Quality area, choose the next higher quality setting. If the current setting is Draft, choose Normal. If the current setting is Normal, choose Best.
Step three: Print in grayscale (black area streaking only)
If the streaks are in a black area of a black and white printout, change to grayscale printing.
NOTE:- This step does not apply to color printouts.
In the application you are printing from, click File, and then click Print.
Make sure the printer is selected and click Properties.
Click the Color tab, and select Print Grayscale and High Quality.
Step four: Clean the printheads
If the print quality is still bad, clean the printheads.
Make sure the printer is loaded with unused white paper.
Open HP Solution Center.
Click Settings, Print Settings, and then select Printer Toolbox.
Click the Service Tab.
Click Clean Printhead, and then click Clean.
Step five: Align the printheads
If the print quality is still bad, align the printheads.
Make sure the printer is loaded with unused white paper.
Open the printer Toolbox, and select the Printer Services tab.
Click Align Printheads. The Align Printheads window opens. Click Align.
The printer prints an alignment page. The lines in the patterns should appear to be straight. Click OK when the page finishes printing.
Step six: Calibrate the linefeed
If the print quality is still bad, calibrate the linefeed:
Make sure the printer is loaded with unused white paper.
Open the printer Toolbox and select the Printer Services tab.
Click Calibrate Advanced Linefeed. The Advanced Linefeed Calibration window opens. Click OK .
Step seven: Replace one or both printheads
If the print quality is still bad after performing all the above steps, one or both of the printheads will have to be replaced. Print a PQ Diagnostic page to see which printhead should be replaced.
Make sure the printer is loaded with unused white paper.
Press the Setup button.
Press 1 and * simultaneously.
Look at the color blocks labeled Test Pattern 2. Some or all of them could show white horizontal streaks. If none of the blocks are streaked, the printheads are okay.
If the Black block has lines – replace the KY printhead.
If the Cyan block has lines – replace the MC Printhead.
If the Magenta block has lines – replace the MC Printhead.
If the Red block has lines – replace the KY printhead.
If the Green block has lines – replace the KY printhead.

Canon S600 bubblejet priner won't print color

In all likelihood, the nozzles in the printhead are blocked. The printhead is the carrier that holds the tanks. Remove the printhead and remove the tanks from the printhead. Flush the printhead THOROUGHLY with hot running water. You can also **** on the color discharge area (square and the black discharge area (rectangular) on the bottom to draw warm watr through the nozzles to further clean them. Dry the prinhead thoroughly, reinsert your tanks and reinsert the printhead in the printer. I then do a "nozzle check" to refill the passages in the printhead and get things flowing agan.

Ink cartidges practically full but printer says they need replacing

Sometime the ink dry if you do not use it.....Try this :

Put warm water on a soft clothe and gently press the clothe with the printhead you'll suppose to see ink on your clothe. That's the better way to clean a printhead.

DO NOT SCRATCH THE PRINTHEAD WITH YOUR CLOTHE..

Prints only the top 3 inches or so of a web or email page

This is a beginning to be a really common problem with this type of Canon. I had one that did this too,It sounds like your printheads or rollers are dirty and clogged. You need to thoroughly clean the area where the cartidges sit in (printheads) new cartridges and all the allignments in the world will not resolve clogs, and it will not be sufficient to just rely on the canons own cleaning, you have to manually do it with cleaning solution and cotton buds (q-tips)
