Thanks but this did not help. There are now the initials: NR next to the flash sign on the menu. Also when I use the pop-up viewfinder the flash is indeed flashing green to charge, but above the sign the numbers 8o appear. As in eight and small zero. Unfortunately I am in the Caribbean on a tiny island with no dealer or camera shop! Any more suggestions?

Thanks for your last suggestions. I followed the bio instructions you posted and as far as the camera is concerned it doesn't have a problem! There was no fault code showing on page four.
I have a number for Olympus which I will try and see if I can organise something via Fedex. We do actually have an office here on Nevis.
I have to say that although matters like this are more difficult from here. You are right about being here. Most problems can be solved by looking at the sunset with a large glass of rum!

    Cheers!

Just an update and a rating. Spoke to technical support at Olympus who talked me through a few things and guess what? You were bang on! The flash isn't charging so I award you 100%. Will be sending camera to Europe as guarantee is still active.

    Thanks

Hi

There may be a problem with the charging unit on the camera itself which will require service attention.

However first remove the Lithium Ion battery from the camera. Check that the contacts are clean - rub them over with a clean rag. Reinsert and power up again. Ensure that you have not turned the flash function off in the menu at any point by mistake.

Observe to see if the lightening symbol is flashing to indicate flash is charging when the flash is activated.

You can also return to the camera to factory default settings, set [RESET] under [CUSTOM RESET SETTING] to see if this helps.

If the charge light does not work or there is no change after applying the above solutions there is a component failure which will require service by Olympus.

Hope this helps. Please remember to rate my answer. Many Thanks.

    Hi

The NR beside the flash Icon stands for (Flash) Not Ready. This again points to a charging issue.

    The 80 you see is likely to refer to Error 80 which has a generic description as follows;

    ERR 80: SHUTTER
DESCRIPTION: This error occurs in the following conditions.

    1. When the self-check system detects that the shutter has not been fully charged (ready to shoot).
    2. When the self-check system detects that the shutter operation sequence has not been completed correctly.
    3. When the built-in flash cannot be recharged after the E-TTL preflash but before the main exposure.

REMEDIAL MEASURE: Try clearing the error by turning the main power switch OFF and then back ON. If this does not solve the problem, the camera will have to be examined by a qualified service technician.

There is a link here to accessing the hidden damage codes on your camera. It does take a bit of reading to figure it out. It might be worth having a look at to see if you can further pinpoint the fault.

Be careful with this as you are enetering the cameras bios and you do not want to change things inadvertently in here!

Ideally a tech needs to look at your camera and whilst that is certainly problematic from your present location you can at least have great satisfaction from the fact that whilst I am typing this I am enviously thinking of how nice it would be to be stranded on a Caribean Island with this problem !!!!

I think I shall suggest this now as the final or alternative option on all my solutions!

i.e. - If all else fails and frustration builds - try a glass of rum whilst looking at the sunset and be aware this solution is best applied from a Carribean Island vantage point!

Heh heh - don't know how that would go down on other fixes!

Am glad you found the solution helpful and at least the camera is still under warranty so there is a fairly happy ending.

If you are happy to use the accept option on my solution I believe you will be given a rating screen from there.

Thanks for using FixYa and enjoy that sunset and do have a tot of Rum for me!

    Regards

How do i turn flash off on my olympus stylus 410 camera

Press cursor-right repeatedly to cycle through the various flash modes. The one you want is the lightning bolt in a circle with a slash through it. For full details see the "Using the flash" section in the reference manual (beginning on page 72 in my copy). If you need a manual you may download a copy from here.

Flash Does not work. Can only take pictures in flash-off mode

The problem you are describing is a problem with the flash charging indicator switch inside the camera. It seems to have failed and needs to be replaced. Following are the instructions to send your camera to Olympus for service.

http://olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_servicerepair.asp

Olympus will charge a flat rate repair fee for this product if beyond the one year factory warranty or the warranty is voided. The cost is $83 plus your local sales tax. This covers parts and labor, factory cleaning and diagnostic check, 6 month warranty and the cost of shipping the product back to you is all included in that price.

this is when the camera doesn't have enough light for auto focus! to suppress it, disable the option "auto pop-up" in the settings menu of the camera. you then might risk unsharp images but strobing won't happen until you manually pop-up the built in flash.

to get rid of the whole thing, you can buy one of the olympus e-system external flashes like fl-36 or fl-50. these bring a red-light for auto focus assistance.

It is something that seems to be a problem with the Stylus 410s. Olympus will not repair them unless they are under warrenty, I've tried. My best advice, and what I am in the midst of myself (I have 2 of these with the same problem) is to file with the BBB. Perhaps if enough complaints come through, they will begin to fix the stylus 410 defect as they should. Good luck. =)

Will not take picture

This has happened with 2 of our Stylus 410s. It has to do with the flash not working. If you turn off the flash, the picture will take. I am trying to figure out how to fix the flash portion myself...=)
