Three reasons. 1. The charger is bad. 2. The Battery is dead. 3. The charging circuit is faulty. To check each Use a different charger or use a different battery. If both are fine then the third fault is confirmed.

The charging system light started flashing and now it will not crank

Bad alternator or bad battery. Jump start it and go to an auto parts store and have them test your battery and alternator. Pray its the battery. My alternator was $399, and that was if I installed it my self.

simple test after you start it.. unhook the battery. if it keeps running it is the battery.... if the motor dies it's the alternator.
