I recognize that you've previously visited Gateway's support site, but I recommend trying again at the follow page. You can choose your exact desktop from this list:

http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/ddaStep.asp?platform=10021&st=browse

You should be able to find the driver for your DVD drive there.

If not, you can open the computer case, find out what the manufacturer of the DVD-ROM is and go to their site to find the necessary driver.

Also, have you tried using the "Update Driver" utility in Windows? You can manage drivers from within the Computer Management console of Windows.

1. Right-click on My Computer and select Manage.
2. Then select Device Manager.
3. Expand CD/DVD-ROM drives.
4. Right-click the drive and select "Update Driver"

--Good luck!

Restore point will not work, and none of the software programs I have will recognize the DVD drive, so i can burn a DVD. They only recognize the Cd drive.

Have you made any recent hardware changes to your PC?

First check device manager by right clicking on My Computer and then properties. If using Vista or Windows 7 device manager should appear on the left side. If in XP or earlier click the hardware tab and then device manager. Find your dvd drive in the listing and make sure there are no errors present for the device. Go to the devices manufacturers website and download the lastest drivers. Install and reboot.

If the device does not appear in device manager and installing drivers did not fix it, the device may have become unplugged or may not be installed properly.

I have a Systemax Venture Microsoft Windows XP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 3. The system will not longer play dvd's or cd's and cannot burn cd's as well. I'm not sure if something has...

Well the fact that when you put in a cd it does not see it indicates that either the CD Drive is not being detected or the drive has gone faulty and needs replacing.
First Look in the bios of the computer to see if it is seen the drives section. If it is there then look in windows under control panel , system, device manager. Now look under DVD/CD Roms drives (this may differ slightly in XP) to see if in there with no error against it. If not and not in the bios either then the drive has failed. If however it shows in DVD/CD Roms with no error then try a different make of cd/DVD. If this works then the Bios of the drive will need updating. This info is on the manufacturers website. Good luck.

The fix for this problem is to reinstall the device driver. You can get updated drivers from the manufacturers website under the support section. If you are using a system like Dell or Gateway they have the drivers in your system support section of their websites. Hope this helps & please rate this answer fixya. Thanks.
