Question about Boss Rc 50

3 Answers

My boss rc 50 looper will hold it's sync to an external clock [the boss dr 880]. I HAVE ALL THE settings correct to allow for external control of tempo. Both patch and system are set to 'auto' like the manual says and it doesn't seem to hold it's sync after about 4 - 5 times of a played loop..what's up with this?

they are both set at exact tempo settings and problem is still there.
S\hould I use the rc50 as the master - syncing the dr880 to it ?

I will try and see if this works..I know there is some kind of lag thing goin' on here probably on the millisecond scale and like u said it takes a few times around to notice it..Similar to vector lines - the farther out u go the bigger the gap..can u do me a favor and tell the roland people to make refinements on how to control this issue?

here is a post I copied from a forum on the same subject..
This unit/model is whacked as midi compatible..Does not work..

have got the latest model and it still doesnt
sync to midi and the mute after first record is there too. this mute is
just enyoing , specially for a looper which is called the most ultimate
looper ever. midi you just cant use that way, after half a minute your
loop and the drum-machine will start to go different ways.

this looper offers really a lot of possibities, for me to many. for
gigs i guess its dangerous to present your music with this looper, it
becomes a lot about the looper, less the music you play, and in the end
a loop is a playback. if its not freestyle music and you know what you
will loop you might better play to a cd on stage. its easier. but well,
its not the place to judge loop machines in general..

for me this machine has no soul( and doesnt work properly) and i
got now the lexicon jam man, which has a nice charakter. i added more
memory, got the 2. footswitch ( impossible to find the original, but
its to easy to built one,, even for me) and i have my ideal looper even
with perfect midi sync. it has less but very cool features, and wayyyyyy
    cooler than the digitech jamman...

well overall, i m very happy i didnt buy the boss. its not total ****, but i just didnt like it at all so ....

    ? not sure what you're saying....but I know u don't know either..so I guess I am out 13 bucks..

  • gmarino Aug 02, 2009

    Hi Greenspan,
I did all of what you suggested..It works for a couple -two -three -four loop rounds, but still drifts apart from each other and worsens as it plays on for longer.. These symptoms occur when rc 50 is master or slave...I can't believe Boss did not resolve this huge flaw on their super deluxe state of the art looper..It's useless to try and use the lame drum wavs they provide embedded into unit [no rolls - or - realistic beats] and is very sterile in real worls scenarios...I am not sure what to do about this problem...

Try adjusting differently the factory recommends. Double check the connections.

I assume that both devices are running properly, just do not hold sync. To solve this, try the following steps (and recheck after each):

1) define the dr880 as "master"
2) try to run the RC50 not in AUTO mode, but in REMOTE mode
3) check if the bpm settings are the same on clock and looper for System/USB and Phrase (1-3)

This should bring it to work in sync.

Try to sync them manually ..on tempo value ...cause that may be a slightly difference between them factory settings ...and even if you didnt see the difference at first ..after a few loops..the difference it became obvious cause of the long period of time accumulated ..so if at first the difference isnt visible it became almost like stepping on seven ...Im not sure but it might be the problem ..

yep ..this might be a sol. cause maybe the 880 has the issue with temporizer ..try it an let me know ...but ..I still believe that its just a problem of fine tuning ..

I use to use some old stuff and it was on midi ...so I can not imagine exactly the issue ..but its impossible to not be able to stabilize it ..

yep ...exactly ..the issue its in a millisecond difference ..and the cause is not into the settings you made ..but in the standard they use...so ..the gap its progressing in time ...direct proportional ...and ...about the second issue do ya really think they care ?? study it ..maybe it has a manual synchronization where you can fine tune them at a millisecond scale ...try to put a very slow tempo so you can be able to see the difference...

I see . if you put the problem this way ..its always what brings ya in front and not necessarily the best machine they made...Im not playing anymore..and Im in computers..but I do understand both cause i made some music..and I know what ya mean, I totally agree that its what you feel comfortable to play with that's matters ...so ..if you like this combination it worth the struggle to make it work ..

Feb 07, 2013 | Roland Boss DR 880 Dr Rhythm Drum Machine

Tip

RC looper and DR880 syncing.

RC-50 & DR-880 Setup
Rather than using the RC-50 to change patches on the DR-880, I have connected an FS-6 footswitch to both the RC-50 & DR-880. This gives me control of both units, I can select up & down through the patches easily.
Use a dual TRS connector and 2 stereo "y" cables connected to ports 1,2 & 3.4 on both units.
Once connected, you will need to assign the control function for each control port. I assigned Patch Decrease to CLT 1,2 & Patch Increase to CLT 3,4 on both units.
I then connected a MIDI cable from the RC--u control of start/stop & tempo via the RC-50 footswitches.

Hi Nothing happens when I connect my Boss RC-50 to my Windows 7 Packard Bell computer

The Boss RC50 is intended for guitar level signal. Your computer takes line-level. Hence your effects are "down in the noise' and you don't hear them.

Im trying to connect two rc-50 via midi! I want one of the them to act as a master and the other one as a slave. The goal is to have both machines working independently but have all loops on each rc-50 to...

While you can probably get the functions sent by MIDI to transfer to the other unit, syncing PROBABLY isn't going to work very well because there is a lag to form the MIDI sync clock (serial data) and then receive it, decode it and do something with it.The transmit time is about 1/3000 of a second and receiving is at least that much time. On rhythm things I have found the ear can hear 1/1000 of a second easily. If one could set the machines to use an EXTERNAL sync clock and drive the SAME clock to both units, you might be able to sync them together time wise as they would see the sync at identical times.

I was trying to transfer data from the RC-50 to my computer and pulled out the USB cable by mistake from the computer and now the RC-50 says Data Damaged. I think I may have put the file in the trash in...

Usually in any type of situation when data is being transferred and the connection is prematurely lost there is data lost and or file corruption.

My suggestion:

Connect the Boss Rc 50 to your computer and backup its entire contents to your computer if possible.

Next perform a Hard Reset: While simultaneously holding down the "PLAY MODE" and "LOOP SYNC" buttons, turn the power on. Everything should be restored to factory settings.

If your backup was successful, then you can transfer desired files (one at time) to determine if the are usable. If a file causes errors or malfunction, then most likely it is corrupt.

Hope this helps

My Boss RC-50 has stopped working. I used the power chord for my RC 50 in my Boss OC 3 pedal and then tried using the chord in my RC 50 again and it won't work. It won't even work with other power...

CHeck the voltage out of the adapter. It should be around 9 to 11 volts. If it is not, it is possible that the OC3 has reversed polarity AND a protector that put a short on an incorrect supply. If so, it could have damaged the RC50 adapter. If the RC50 adapter is putting out correct voltage, then I suspect the inout connector on the RC50 may be damaged or not quite seated. Visually inspect the connector first.

I cleared one folder called WAVE with my computer and now there´s a messege on screen "data damage". the folder contains the preseted sounds inside. i need help.

Here's a hunch:
When the RC-50 was hooked up, your computer had access to the internal memory. The WAVE directory is where the wave data is stored. The RC-50 must have noticed that the wave data for patches that were supposed to have data was in fact gone.

So, you can probably just do a factory reset:
With the power off, while holding both single/multi and loop-sync, power the RC-50 up until it greets you with SYSTEM/PATCH use the PARAMETER buttons to go back and forth. In your case, you can probably leave "SYSTEM" alone and just select PATCH. Once you've selected which section of the RC-50 you want to reset, hit the WRITE button.

I receive the message "memory full !" after 5 seconds of playing, which normaly means you have to empty the datas, but on my computer I can see no data in the boss...

I have this, its a lovely looper when it works. what I think is the problem is that you need to empty the trash. If on a mac just go to finder and press empty trash while the unit is attached to the computer. If using a pc then follow the same procedure to empty the waste bin, as its called on a pc. Hope this helps!

Beggining of loop missing on FIRST playback only, on Boss RC-50.

Ok, solved this problem by visiting roland U.S. site as the help offered in this country is useless. The instructions given by email would not have worked even after the update was installed. Luckily, there are instructions that come with the download. If you have same problem as me go to http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.php?ProductId=772&tab=downloads&skip=true

and update the opperating system on the RC-50 to RC-50 System Update Version 1.01.

Then hold loop sync and phrase 2 button (think it was phrase 2) to change it to sound priority mode. Then it will play back correctly what you recorded on the first loop, rather than missing the first beat.

Am v.happy I have found this, as after much searching I can't find any other loopers out there that offer 3 seperate loop tracks and the ability to switch between them effectively. Plus, it's a very convenient size, better than a load of rackmounted stuff to haul around.

However.....

Another problem..

When hitting the reverse switch ( I assigned both external footswitch and the onboard Tempo pedal to reverse) the change is not instanteaneous. There is a second or so delay before it plays in reverse. Not a problem for most, I suppose, but I have a piece that switches rythmicaly between playing forward and reverse which means hitting a pedal in time and reverse/forwards changing immediately. I think they could do with another software update to solve this. Now I have to keep room in my enormous pedal board for the old rc-20, as that does the reverse as it should - when you hit the flippin switch!
