Sounds like the hard drive may be going on your Tivo. Seeing that the hard drives in tivo units are constantly working: buffering incoming live tv data, writing your season passes, playing back recorded programs and erasing old unwanted programs, the hard drives used in tivos are bound to develop bad sectors or corrupt data at some point in time. Whether it be freezing, pixellization, random reboots, or everyone's favorite GSOD (Green Screen of Death), your tivo has many ways of letting you know your hard drive may be in jeopardy.
So for those of you who have the time and technical prowess, here's how to find out if your drive has kicked the bucket and if all of your episodes of Battlestar Galactica have been lost with no chance of recovery.

If you are using a Seagate drive, you can download Seagate's diagnostic tools here (http://www.seagate.com/support/seatools/)

If you are using a Maxtor drive, you can download Maxtor's diagnostic tools here (http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor/menuitem.3c67e325e0a6b1f6294198b091346068/?channelpath=%2Fen_us%2FSupport%2FSoftware+Downloa ds%2FView+By+Category%2FDesktop+Storage%2FMaxtor+O ther%2FDiagnostics&downloadID=22)

If you are using a Western Digital drive, you can download Western Digital's diagnostic tools here (http://support.wdc.com/download/index.asp?cxml=n&pid=999&swid=3)

and finally, for the few folks that might have a Samsung drive, go here (http://www.samsung.com/support/productsupport/download/Model_Select.aspx?type=HDD&typecode=300300&subtype=HDD&subtypecode=300301&model=SV1203N&filetype=SW&language=) to download Samsung's diagnostic tool

Let me know how this turns out

If these are original hard drives, they are probably corrupt or have gone bad.

You can order a replacement (upgrade) drive or just software and make your own from:

It sucks that you can't dial in anymore, but if you have broadband internet there is an easy solution. You can buy for about $20 on Newegg a LiInksys USB200M USB ethernet adapter that allows your Tivo to connect to the Tivo service using your broadband internet. If you modem is in fact dead, this may be the only chance you have at getting Tivo to connect again. I have 2 SD-H400 and I don't (and have never) use the telephone line. I use the broadband connection only and have never had a problem.

Even if you don't have broadband you can get this to work with the USB200M and dial up too. You'll have to connect to your dial up provider using your PC, then set your PC up to use Windows built in "Internet Connection Sharing". You then connect your Tivo to you PC using an ethernet cable. If the cable goes directly from the Tivo to the PC, you'll need a crosswired or crossover ethernet cable. If you have a network switch or network hub in between, you can use a regular network cable. Use your Tivo menus to "Connect to the Tivo Service Now" and it should connect and get any Guide or Software Updates that are available. Keep in mind this will be painfully slow as dial up internet is much slower than broadband.

This problem could also be caused by a recent switch in telephone connection. If you are now using a Voice Over IP (VOIP) telephone, I don't think Tivo will connect with that type of phone line. You're only option then will be the USB200M and some type of network connection to the internet.

SD-H400

It looks like Toshiba discontinued support on it several years ago. It might work on a cable tv system but without firmware upgrades it won't recognize any channels past 600. You would think they could have made some software to fix it since Tivo is software dependent running on a Linux operating system. You may want to contact Tivo to see if they support it and have a firmware upgrade for it. At least they can send one over the phone lines to your Tivo or through the internet if your wireless.

Remote Control stopped working

Try these simple trick to find out yor remote control working or not....
Point the remote control towards the Camera of a Mobile Camera phone, with the camera on. While pressing remote, we can see a light (Infra Red) coming from its IR LED through the Mobile Camera if the Remote is working.
Otherwise the problem will be with the remote sensor or related components of the device.
