You put the belt on ,start the mower ,and it flies off the pulley look under and the tension spring is pulled back and belt is twisted with it
It would be helpful if you could provide some pictures so I could see what it is doing. Generally the belt will be thrown off if it is badly worn and hence it is loose, so a replacement might fix the problem. You should also make sure that it runs correctly around all the pulleys as it is easy to get one wrong, finally make sure that all the grass has been cleaned from the tensioner and around the pulley guides, and that the pulleys are not badly worn. If they are badly worn, the belt will sit in the bottom of the pulley instead of on the sides, and will throw off really easily. A damaged belt will also cause it to be thrown off.

The fact is that belts don't stretch. They wear down on the sides, causing them to ride deeper in the pulleys and they APPEAR to be longer. Check belt "width" to see if it is less than one half inch. Most craftsman riders use half-inch (AKA: "A section") belts.

Yes, there is an idler arm with a pulley that presses either inward or outward against the belt to tension it. In some JD mowers, the arm is tensioned by pulling on a long metal rod that latches near the edge of the mower deck, but without the model number I can't be more precise about that. Just look for that extra pulley and arm it's mounted on -- you'll see a tension spring, and you should also see a way to pull the arm away from the spring to place it under tension. Good luck!

i had a 2148. you remove the mower deck as the first step. feed the belt over the pulley on top the transmission, then put it over the engine pulley. then have someone push the clutch pedal in so the tensioner pulley moves, put the belt in the guide pulley and on the tensioner. release the clutch put the deck back on and you are good to go. notice there are little keepers welded to the frame for the front, engine, pulley and it is easy to mistakenly put the belt over them instead of under them.
a general rule is that a pulley shaped like a Vee takes the V of the belt whilst a pulley which is flat takes the flat back of the belt. if you bear that in mind you will not have a problem putting belts back on. also there is a little decal on top the deck showing how the deck belt and deck drive belt go.

Hi, check the idler pulley arm and return spring on that belt. Its most likely not pivoting freely allowing the belt to loosen when you operate the clutch, regards Phil.
Testimonial: "Thanks! Found the bearing in the idler pulley was shot and the arm it pivots on bent. I'll let you know if the new parts solve my problem!!"
