I have compaq presario S2021a and it appears that the dvd/cd driver isn't loaded even though i have a place put them, it doesn't recognise it

Assuming it is beyond the warranty to have it fixed, you should be able to go the web site for the maker of your DVD/CD player and after selecting the model number you have, you can "download" the driver even if the device is not working.

Also, depending upon how old your system is you might just have to replace it. They are fairly cheap to buy either on-line or from an electronics store.

If you don't know the name of the device you have installed, go to www.belrac.com they have free download that will show you EVERYTHING that is in your computer by brand name. You can even print it out for your own reference.

If you want to install a new replacement unit, it really is easy. Instructions will come with the new device or even before you buy one, go to www.youtube.com and type in "how to replace a DVD/CD on a computer" and there will be a large selection of videos to give you an idea of how it is done.

Hope this helps.

How do I install Windows 7 on my Acer Aspire 5536

The FIRST thing people need to do when proceeding to install Windows 7, is to make SURE there are compatible DRIVERS.

IF the computer manufacturer does not offer Windows 7 compatible drivers, for the computer in question, DO NOT load Windows 7.

[ Drivers are small pieces of software written, so that the Operating System can 'communicate' with a device.

Windows Vista, and Windows 7 are two examples of an O/S.
Audio (Sound), Graphics, LAN, and so on, use a chipset.
This chipset is a device.

Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_Circuit ]

Fortunately I looked, and Win7 drivers are available for the Acer Aspire 5536 Notebook PC,

http://support.acer.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=1119

BEFORE you install Win7, click on the Drivers, and download the compatible drivers for THE device in your computer, and the matching Win7 driver.

Burn them to a CD disk. Have ready to install.

[ Acer doesn't list what each driver is, until you click on Download, at the right side of the driver file.

Let's take Audio for one example.
There are 4 Audio drivers listed.

Click on Download at the right side, of the first Audio driver listed.
In the small window that comes up, you can see it is for WinXP.
XPx86. (Windows XP 32-bit)

It is also for a RealTek audio device. (Chipset)
(All the Audio drivers are)

Click on the second Audio driver listed. (Click on Download)
This one is for Vista
The third one is for Windows 7 that is 64-bit, OR 32-bit.

(Look at the Windows 7 carton. Does it state 32-bit, or 64-bit?
Doesn't matter for the above driver, as it is for both, but other drivers may be just for 32-bit, OR 64-bit.)

Go to Device Manager, and see what each device is.
(Click on the Windows start button, click on Control Panel, click on Performance and Maintenance, then on Device Manager)

Write them down. Download, and burn to disk the proper drivers ]

NOW, with the proper drivers available, proceed to install Windows 7.

(I have been told that some Vista drivers do work for Windows 7.
Need to make sure, as once you install Windows 7, it is a bear to try to reinstall Vista, if Win7 does not work)

Windows does not like to be written over, and Vista has a security measure that is better than previous versions.

Go to BIOS Setup, and in Boot Options, make sure the first boot device is CDROM.

How?
As soon as the computer is started look down at the bottom of the screen.
You won't see the P.O.S.T. screen, but the Acer logo screen.
At the bottom of this screen, states what key to press to enter BIOS Setup.

(Power-On Self Test)

It may state something along the lines of;
enter Setup, or
enter BIOS Setup, or
Enter CMOS Setup. (Old. Doubt it)

This screen goes by f-a-s-t.
You probably won't be able to press the correct key in time, to enter BIOS Setup.
No problem.

Simply restart the computer. As soon as it restarts, start tapping on the appropriate key. (In 2 second intervals)

You may hear a beeping as you are tapping on the key. This is a Stuck Key Error Code. Ignore it.

Should be the DELete key, or F2.

When you enter BIOS Setup you CANNOT use your mouse anymore. You use the Keyboard.

The navigation guide is at the bottom of every screen in BIOS Setup.
It doesn't state navigation guide, however.

There are two major BIOS manufacturers. AMI (American Megatrends Inc), and Award/Phoenix.

There are several versions of each, so I cannot guide you directly.
However if you need help just post what you see, and I will guide you.

For additional questions please post in a Comment.

Computer does not recognize cd/dvd combo TSST Corp SH-S182D have yellow mark by device in Device Manager appears the driver was lost

Hello,
Your device may be damaged, but here are some things you can try.
Go to the Device manager and right click your CD/DVD drive and select remove / delete. Now download this VB script and run it. (You may have to right click it once downloaded and select run as administrator if using Vista /Win 7) Restore CD/DVD in Explorer
Now reboot your PC.
If that doesn't work you may also try unplugging the device physically and replug it in, using another SATA/IDE/USB port.

CD player will not work

Try a different CD. iIf the computer doesn't recognize it at all, listen for the drive to spin and look for a blinking light on the CD tray. These signs do not necessarily mean the CD drive isn't broken. I would find the model number of your laptop and do a search on eBay for a replacement CD drive. These are very easy to switch out. If the new one works, then you're set. If it doesn't work, there may be an issue with your motherboard.
