Re: fan stopped

If the fan has stopped, then the processor will overheat. Most vendors have protection so that a non-working fan is detected and the unit will not power up with detecting its rotation. Seems like a repair shop job I'm afraid.

Is there a quick fix to replacing the processor fan on a Dell Inspron 1000

Not a quick fix, but you can buy a cooling base unit for it which plugs into one of your usb ports which supplies power for the built in fan.

Dell Inspron 1000 processor fan stopped working. Is there an easy fix ???

The only easy fix would be to purchase a laptop tray that includes fans like those sold at OfficeMax and it would save you the trouble of having to open the laptop and maybe keep it cool enough to work for a while without it shutting down.

Cooling fan, or harddrive.

Only two movable parts, besides the optical drive. (CD/DVD drive)

I suspect the cooling fan. Why?
Inside your laptop is a Processor. It, like the other hardware components inside, are cooled by air. That little fan is all that pushes air through the laptop.

Here, let me use a Toshiba Satellite C650 series of Notebook PC, as an example,

Scroll the page down, click on the photo next to Step 22.
Here you see the TOP of the cooling fan.

Close the photo. Scroll the page down, and click on the photo next to Step 24.

Fan Assembly removed.

That fan sits in bronze bushings. The bushings look like thick tubes, and the fan's shaft sits in those bushings. (One one top, one on bottom)

After time the bushings wear out. This allows the fan to c-ock over to one side. Plus makes a groaning sound.

Replace the Fan Assembly.

One example,

Now, am I stating that THIS is the problem?
I am stating this is the first place to start.

If the laptop is dirty inside, it is almost a sure bet that this is the problem.

Because if the fan bearings are dry, and worn out, the fan will not operate as it should. It will spin slower than it should, and may have periods where it just stops altogether.

This allows the Processor to overheat. When a Processor overheats it turns off. (BIOS turns it off)
This is a fail safe feature built-in. Keeps the Processor from burning up.

No Processor operating, no computer.

Want to replace the Fan Assembly yourself? No prob! Doesn't take a rocket scientist. (Sorry Gort)
HOWEVER, there is a PROPER procedure. Post back in a Comment, that you want to replace it yourself, and I will guide you.

{Plus you will be cleaning out the inside of that laptop }

Compaq presario fan stopping

Take it back to the place of purchase since it is under warranty, otherwise you will damage the processor which the cooling fan protects.

N610C computer-fan evidently stopped working. DVD-Rom works, Display does not power up nor the Hard drive. Hard drive works on other commputers. Battery light does not show charge, but DMM confirms power...

If the fan stopped working then..none of the things will work because there is no cooling system for the processor...take this computer to a local tech..or if you cacn do..upside down the laptop at the bottom remove the cover(small partitions) check for the dust there...clean that area with a vacum cleaner..

Slow speed, fan coming on loudly in Dell D800

Yeah the slowdown is the laptop throttling back due to overheating.

When you do processor-intensive work like - streaming videos - the laptop overheats. The fans come on loudly.

When the computer heats up despite the fans, the processor throttles back to relieve the heat.

When you reboot your machine, it stops performing intensive work, giving it a chance to cool down. It's not restarting that fixed the problem it's the fact that the laptop cooled down.

So here's what you do. Get an air duster and blow all the dust and gunk out from your fans. They are most likely clogged with dust and that's what's causing your cooling problems. If there are large dustballs in there, use a tweezers and pull them out. Get as much out as possible.

Cooling fan stop working

It's normal for the fan to stop and start, as needed. However, it sounds as if the heat sink attached to the processor and fan may be clogged with dust/fuzz/hair, etc. If you can, vacuum or blow air back through the ventilation ports to clear the debris.
This usually causes the fan to run constantly. It's possible that you need to adjust the power management settings in control panel-toshiba power management.
Also, try keeping the laptop in a cool place and see if it makes a difference.
Let me know how it works.
Good luck
