Question about Garden

1 Answer

20 hP briggs engine keeps burning up the altenator under flywheel. Checked amperage and doesn't seem to be high. After the engine runs a few minutes it melts the alternator and it grounds out. When the alternator is first replaced and the regulator is unplugged I get about 30 volts AC., plug in the regulator and it shows were it should about 14 volts DC. Could it still be a bad regulator. It has 3 leads, 2 yellow and one red.

Yes it sounds like the voltage regulator is shorted. The 30 ac volts is correct for the alternator output. The yellow leads on the regulator shouldn't read ohms between each other or to the aluminum case. The red lead shouldn't read ohms to the aluminum case.If you do a diode test between either of the yellow wires to the red wire it should read one way only. If it reads both ways in a diode test it is bad.Voltage regulators are cheap on ebay

17.5 hp briggs and stratton mower - mowing fine - stopped to gas up - will not start back up - back fires a few times while turning motor over

sounds like you may have a broken valve spring. Do a compression test as you crank it. If the valve spring is broken, you will get nearly zero compression, it will turn over very easily and this would explain a couple of backfires.

Briggs 20 hp engine runs rich and backfires

Backfiring and running rich? It sounds more like the engine is running lean. Your problem sounds like a fuel problem rather than an ignition issue. However, did you by any chance strike a rock or something solid while mowing? The reason I ask is because you replaced the flywheel key. Another possibility is that the crankshaft has been bent and that could also cause the problem you are describing.

Put new battery on 14 hp v-twin Briggs, started and ran for a while. Shut motor off then came back and tried to start, acts like the battery is dead. Where is the generator/altenator located on these?

The generator is under the flywheel with or part of the ignition coil.

Check all the battery wiring and grounds. A bad or weak connection will act the same way.

The procedure for starting an engine is as follows:
  • Check that you have the throttle in the start position and/or on high revs with choke on
  • Prime the engine by pushing the button about 5 times
  • Pull out the cord until you meet resistance. Then let the cord go fully back into the engine and then pull the cord out sharply. Repeat this until the engine starts but not more than a few times.
  • If the engine doesn't start, try pressing the primer button another few times then try to pull start the engine
  • If the engine doesn't start after a few pulls it may have flooded so leave it for a few minutes before pulling the starter rope

It could easily be an electrical issue, or not. Get a spark tester (hooks up to the spark plug). Pep boys, Autozone, and Napa all sell them for less than $10. Check for spark when the mower has quit. If no spark, most likely need to replace the ignition module. Also check the flywheel key, if it is has been sheared or even knicked, the engine will run hot.
If you still have spark when engine has failed, check the vent on the gas cap. A clogged vent will cause a vacuum to form in the tank and stall the engine.
Good luck!

It Starts and runs fine for about 15 minutes then

I think that your right. Sounds like your ignition coil witch is most likely located under the the flywheel cover. I know that on some briggs and stratton engines they are actually under the flywheel, just trace the sparkplug wires to know for sure. When the ignition coil beginns to fail they start slowly (spitting and sputtering) and then they get to the point to where they stop firing after getting heated up and adventually quit all together.

Not firing

there are a few things that could cause this one it could be that the coil is shorted also it could be a shorted high tension wire better known as plug wire.it could be dirt or rust on the magnetic portion of the flywheel.or it could be the sheer pin that holds the flywheel in place that keyway pin is also the timing pin if the machine hit a rock or for any reason stopped abruptly you could have damaged the keyway pin and threw it out of time simple fix replace pin with a new one.(question )are you sure it is not firing or could it be firing but just weak.?? did you check the key switch i have had some small engines crank but not start do to bad starter switch is it electric start? does it have a oil safety shutoff switch? keep me posted and i will try my best to get you going. good luck and i hope thes tips and questions help mrdmburns@cableone.net
keep me posted..
