same problem, it does not help by just changing 4 transistors.

  • Anonymous Feb 19, 2008

    The fix...

The REASON the four (or less) transistors die in the first place, is because the transformers have bad solder joints. Since incomplete voltage is supplied to the transistors, they go bad.

There are four small transformers near the quad set of transistors. EACH transformer feeds one transistor for the back light circuit. You MUST re-solder ALL transformer joints on the back of the board after you replace transistors. The transformers have a cold joint problem so when the monitor is turned on, the transformers generate heat, and break connection with the PCB. Then the transistors fail.

If you don't re-solder all the small transformer leads, the transistors WILL FAIL AGAIN. I have fixed many of these, just reheat the joint and add just a TOUCH of solder to it. I mean a touch...don't cross connect the leads with too much solder. Use a fine wire spool of .050 diameter or less.

    This should solve the problem.

    Have fun!

You must re-solder all the transformer joints (four of them next to the transistors) for a fix. There are cold joints on the transformers that break, causing the transistors to fail. Reheat the joints and add just a TOUCH of solder to them on each and every lead. Don't use too much solder, or you'll cross connect the leads.

That'll fix it.

When you replaced the transistors(All 4 C507) I hope you also resoldered the inverter transformers and the FET which drives the transistors.

I think one of your back lights has gone, there are two of them, I imagine that when it does come on, it's rather dim.
If so, the monitor is scrap.

I have a Dell monitor model #1901FP when my computer comes on the monitor comes on as it should. After only a few seconds the monitor goes blank. You can turn the monitor off then back on the monitor...

The solution I am about to describe refers to a backlight problem, which is most common in Dell 15,17 & 19" monitors. The symptoms are as you describe:
  • You power on the monitor, the green on/off switch illuminates and the display works for approx 1-2 seconds and then goes blank.
  • The green on/off switch stays illuminated but the screen remains blank
  • If you shine a torch into the LCD matrix you can see the display being rendered faintly
  • Switching the monitor off and then on again illuminates the display again for 1-2 seconds before going blank again
This is a backlight fault and is most likely to be caused by the failure of two of the four driver transistors used to light the lighting tubes in the LCD Matrix. This fault is easy to repair if you (or a friend) have a soldering iron and a voltmeter.

Inside the monitor there is an inverter board that acts as a power supply for the monitor and the logic necessary to control the backlights (illumination and brightness control). There are four lighting tubes, which are controlled by two lighting circuits (two lighting tubes per circuit). At the heart of the inverter board is a chip that monitors feedback from the two lighting circuits and closes the back-light circuit down if either of the lighting circuits fail, thus any component failure will exhibit the same symptoms.

The transistors which fail most often cost pence to replace (types C5706 or C5707). However, their failure in unlikely to be the cause of the problem. My first crack at fixing this fault, by replacing the transistors, resulted in them failing again within 24/48Hrs. The cause of the problem will be dry solder joints or loose connections on the high-voltage side of the circuit, usually on the backlight transformer in the effected circuit. If you re solder each of the connectors on the transformer you will save the transistors from blowing again - the transformer generates 1,400Volts for the lighting tubes and at this voltage, arcing across the a dry solder joint, will quickly destroy the transistors again.

No soldering iron? - A complete inverter board replacement is also reasonably cheap and easy repair. These are widely available.

Sorry of this is more detail than you expected but it may help others reading this article.

The power light on our model E172FPb Dell monitor is blinking. The screen does not turn on. What could be the problem

Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, blown fuses, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed DELL monitors to get some ideas what to look for:
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

hi, extremely common problem for dell 17 in monitors. the capacitors and transistors on the power board internally have gone bad. to get repaired, it may cost 40-50 at a shop. i have repaired these in the past and they always come out well for at least 3 more years. may want to find another monitor though. if you would like steps on how to repair, let me know and i will find my old repair threads to give to you.

You need to open it up and inspect the componente inside, look at the fuse and the transistors in the inverter circuits first, also look for sign of over heating on the board, see pictures here for the guide:

Dell E172FPb screen blinking

If you've tested turning the monitor on without the VGA cable and it's still blinking I'd say there's a problem with one of the capacitors on the power supply card on your screen, when you're able to check it would you mind telling me the brand / reference of it ?

Display dies 3 seconds aafter Power on

This is one soution, many more on the net.

You got parts to fix inside the monitor. Inverter problems. The internet is full of this problem. Some say that even if you replace the bad parts, mostly 2sc5707 transistors, you must find out why they are blowing. Many have replaced the parts only to find out that in a couple hours, the parts are bad again. Solutions range from solder joints, transformers, and other transistors.

Good luck, I'm fixing one as soon as the parts arrive.
