Question about Gateway MX6438 Notebook

1 Answer

Installed new ram and now processor speed is 1/2 of what is was?

I installed a Kingston pc2700 512 MB 333Mhz ram chip to my laptop. That is the same kind that Gateway recomends for my MX6433. The ram is recognized but in system properties it says that my processor speed is 795 Mhz (1/2 speed) instead of 1.59 Ghz without the chip. I pulled the chip out and machine is back to normal. Is the ram not compatable or did I do something wrong? Thanks. for any help you can give me.

Hello Brian -

Is the new RAM you installed the same as what you took out? Are they both PC2700?

Is your laptop running on battery when you're testing to make sure you CPU speed is accurate? The laptop usually ramps down the CPU speed if it is being run off of just battery. Plug it in if this was the case.

Also, the Gateway and eMachines laptops I have encountered have all been notorious for displaying the incorrect CPU speed at times.

I would suggest putting your new RAM in, make sure the laptop is plugged in, and boot it up. This time, let it idle for about 10 minutes and then check your CPU speed to see if it has updated correctly.

First, your pc5300 memory runs default at 6300Mhz, not 333. Perhaps your motherboard Front Side Bus line is 333 in which case the memory will drop to that speed, but if the FSB and memory match speed, then it would run at 6300. Since you have an older unit, I would suppose you are running only 333, and that is average speed for that config. In addition, you are only running 1 gig RAM, which is woefully inadequate for Windows 7, so everything you do is going to be slow.

Hi, I need standard spec info of VGA built on Asus P5GC-MX 1333 whether 64 Mb or 128 Mb. Many thanks & regards, Richard

you can use up to a maximum of 224 mb of your computer's RAM for the onboard video chip to use. You can install a video card with any amount of memory (which would give you a lot better video performance).

I have a Biostar Motherboard K8M800-M7A and i just recently bought a kingston ram memory 1GB 400mhz KVR400X64C3A. Everywhere i look for on the internet says they are compatible but i dont get them to work....

Hello,
You are correct, this motherboard can use either 333mhz DDR (PC2700) or 400mhz DDR (3200) chips.
You may have a bad chip. Also make sure you are not mixing this chip with another of another speed. Its not good practise to mix 333mhz and 400mhz though some motherboards will still work like that.
Your best bet for compatibility is crucial DDR PC3200 • CL=3 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR400 • 2.6V • 128Meg x 64 •
Personally I have had bad luck with kingston ram myself.

Can you elaborate the functions of this product....

NOTE*
The following applies to motherboards such as an AsRock K7S41GX.
It does NOT apply to motherboards supporting the Intel Core i3, i5, i7, and i9 processors.

1) Motherboard diagram,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Motherboard_diagram.svg

A) CPU = Central Processing Unit. Another term is Microprocessor, or Processor for short.
The 'Brain' of the computer.

B) Front Side Bus. Also abbreviated as FSB.
The FSB is the 'Information Highway' between the Processor, and the Northbridge chip.

[Chip and Chipset are slang terms for I.C.
Integrated Circuit,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integrated_circuit ]

C) The motherboard chipset is the Northbridge chip, and the Southbridge chip.

The Northbridge chip handles the faster capabilities of the computer.
It is named NORTHbridge, because on the orientation of the motherboard, it is to the North of the motherboard.

The Southbridge chip handles the slower capabilities of the computer.

D) The Northbridge handles the Processor, Ram Memory, and HIGH-speed graphics.
AGP and PCI Express are high speed graphic technologies.

A graphics card used in a PCI expansion slot, and Integrated Graphics are NOT high speed graphics.

E) The Southbridge handles Integrated Graphics, (OnBoard graphics. Same/same), and the PCI bus.
A graphics card inserted into a PCI expansion slot is one example of Southbridge support.

Any add-in card inserted into a PCI expansion slot, is in the PCI bus.
Therefore handled by the Southbridge chip.

The Southbridge chip also handles IDE (PATA), and SATA harddrives.
Handles USB ports, Ethernet port/s, audio, and the CMOS memory.

F) The Internal Bus is the 'Information Highway' between the Northbridge chip, and the Southbridge chip.

G) The LPC Bus is the 'Information Highway' between the Southbridge chip, and the Super I/O chipset.
The LPC Bus is also the 'Information Highway' between the Southbridge chip, and the BIOS chipset.

H) The Super I/O chipset handles,
Serial port
Parallel port
Floppy Disk Drive
Keyboard
Mouse

2) http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=K7S41GX

The AsRock K7S41GX has;

A) Socket A processor socket. Also known as Socket 462

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_A

Can use AMD processors that fit in a Socket A processor socket, and have either a 200MegaHertz, 266MHz, or 333MHz FSB.

Here is the CPU Support List,

http://www.asrock.com/mb/cpu.asp?Model=K7S41GX

Supports DDR Sdram ram memory at either 266MHz, or 333MHz.
PC2100 and PC2700, respectively.

Maximum TOTAL Amount of Ram Memory is 2GB
Maximum Amount for EACH ram memory slot is 1GB.
There are two ram memory slots.

Has an AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) graphics expansion slot, that supports AGP 4X , or AGP 8X graphics cards. (1.5 Volt)

Has two PCI expansion slots

Supports IDE (PATA) harddrive/s. (2 maximum)
Supports IDE optical drives. (CD or DVD, or burners for both)

The motherboard chipset is a SiS 741GX - Northbridge, and the SiS 963L - Southbridge

Windows Not Showing & Not Supporting Actual RAM installed.

make sure that you don't need to overclock your setting (in BIOS ) so as to get full ddr3 frequency. That it, you need to overclock your CPU speed and if you want to work at great speed, try you upgrade you processor.
try a core 2 duo or a quad-core and make sure that it matches with your FSB, with maximum L catch ( 12 mb)

KINGSTON VALUE RAM 1GB PC3200 MEMORY

Hi,
You have the answer in your question. I have checked the PC specification and you are right, it uses PC2700 memory. Therefore you need to install PC2700 memory. PC3200 memory will be the wrong speed and will not be supported.
