Question about Craftsman Garden

1 Answer

CRAFTSMAN 42" kolher 15.5 hp. will start but have to leave the choke on or set it to idle.when running it surges. disconnect fuel line and crank it over and seams to be getting enough gas. but look at fuel filter and seams to only be less than half full with little gas coming from tank. took cap off. no difference. took carb apart and cleaned. did this twice so far. thinking it might be a venting problem. there is a hole on the left side that i cleaned out. rather deep hole. replaced fuel filter. cleaned and checked plug took wire connectors apart and cleaned. put dielectric grease on connectors. blew air back through tank. any thing else that it might be. it was working fine for the first hour of mowing. shut off to refill with gas. ran for 10 minutes or so then started having problems. thanks scott

    Thank You.
    Will try it tomorrow.
    Little update for tonight.
Had the tail end up in the air while fixed the brake and was thinking.
When I put it back on the ground noticed that the carb was full of gas. Bumped it and cylinder full of gas. Took out plug. Shot lots of gas out of cylinder. Put in another new plug. Started up. Running with full choke on. Dropped down to idle died. Restarted. At idle noticed that at idle, that there is gas blowing back through the choke. Tore carb apart again. Took float all apart. Checked it over. No gas inside float. Cleaned needle and seat. Both looked good. Put back together started up. Same thing. Called it a night. What does the solenoid on the float bowl do. Tried to take part but didn't want to wreck it. Ohms were at 22ohms. Seams a little high. Will read it again in case I read it wrong . Getting way to dark and the bug were eating me alive.

Thanks again for your insight. More tomorrow.

Check the electric fuel solenoid make sure there is voltage to it when engine is running. This model may have 3 relays on the engine harness and one of them is tied into the fuel valve try switch relays. Also check connectors on ignition switch sometimes one terminal can get corroded and cause problems. Also check the plunger on it to be sure it is moving freely. Also the fuel filter is usually half full, there is almost always some air in it.

The fuel solenoid cuts fuel to main jet when ignition switch turns off.Maybe the carburetor is overfilling.Take the air filter housing off and watch it while it is running,if it is overfilling gas will be running out end of carb.If it has fuel pump you have to check this while running if it is gravity feed you can check it with engine off for seepage. It may have a bad inlet needle seat or a piece of grass on inlet seat, sometimes the only way to fix is replace carb.

It may be that the gas cap no longer vents, allowing air to enter the tank as gas is being used. Try to have cap loose to see it it is the problem, and if it is, a very small hole on cap needs to be opened or made.

After about 30 minutes engine will start surging, by partly pulling the choke out it will run better. The carb has been recently rebuilt as well as new filter and fuel line to carb. Tried different fuel...

Typically a surge is caused by a lean condition. I'd say the float is set to low and this is causing the engine to lean out & when you apply the choke it richens it back up.and the surge stops.

Craftsman 19.5 HP Briggs and Stratton engine. Will not start. will start with starter fluid and then stalls. It appears no gas is getting to the carb.

disconnect fuel line from carb and crank engine. NO FUEL-check in-line fuel filter, kinked line, trash or water in bottom of fuel tank. FUEL- gas is stale, has water in it, or carb has sediment in bowl, bottom jet or idle jet.or float could be stuck shut.

My craftsman 18 HP tractor model 917.274400 will not run

Sounds like something is clogged. It may need a new air filter or the carburetor may need cleaning out. Also I would check your fuel, if it is over 30 days old I would replace it. It may be losing compression and either need a new head gasket or the head bolts tightened when it is hot.
Good day.

Cleaned gas and changed fuel filter. Mower only

There are a number of things that can cause this, depending on the engine fitted. Assuming a Briggs & Stratton V-twin...

Check that the carb solenoid under the float bowl is connected, has battery voltage when the ignition switch is at 'RUN', and is functional.

As a quick check, with the engne OFF, turn key to 'RUN' there should be an audiable 'click' from the carb if the solenoid is working.

After that, check that the fuel pump is delivering fuel (disconnect output, and crank engine). SHould be a good flow.

10 year old Craftsman Lawn Tractor won't start

That's really strange. The low-speed fuel adjustment screw may be set way too rich, but that doesn't seem likely. With the air filter off, look at the choke plate if possible as you advance the throttle and see at what point the choke closes. Back it off till the choke opens and then put the filter back on and try to start it at that setting. Another thing that could cause too much fuel is if the adjustment of the carburetor float is off, causing the fuel level to be too high in the carb bowl.

19.5 hp engine shut down while mowing. As though the throttle was just turned off. No fuel seems to be going through the filter. I could blow through both lines from either direction of the fuel filter,...

Remove the fuel tap from the tank and clean the filter inside.Leave the fuel on then and diconnect from filter and check to see if fuel is running freely has it should without cranking.

I had the same problem! I found that the needle valve in the carb was not shutting off the fuel flow when not running. Either replace needle valve or put a shut off valve in the fule line. Should take care of the problem
