Hi,

Thanks for using FixYa!

What you need to do is to format your hard drive. Go to "My computer" right click the hard drive.. then select format. Do not use the quick format procedure. This should solve your problem.

Have a nice day.

1.Open the system drive, usually titled "Macintosh HD." Open
Applications, then Utilities and double click the "Disk Utility"
program to open it. A window will open giving a list of all the drives
    currently mounted on the computer.

    2. Select the disk that needs to be formatted on the left. It is not
possible to format the startup disk unless the system has booted from
the Install Disk. It is important to note that formatting the startup
disk will permanently erase the data stored on the disk. If you are
planning on erasing the startup disk, back up all important files and
    applications.

    3. Click on the "Erase" tab to the right of the list of drives. The window
will now display the options for erasing the hard drive and formatting
it to work on the Macintosh computer.

    4. Select the Volume Format from the pop-up list. In most cases it's best
to leave it at "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as this is the default.
This setting is the best option for running MAC OSX. If there are other requirements for the disk, then select the format
that best suits your needs. If you have questions about the formats,
refer to the Apple user's manual.

    5. Name the hard drive. Type a name for the disk in the field where it
asks for the name. This name will always appear when the disk is
    mounted on a Macintosh computer.

    6. Click the erase button. A window will open asking to verify the erase
procedure. Click the erase button in this window to start the process
of erasing the disk. Once the process is complete, the drive will
appear with the name it was given on the left side of the window with
the list of drives and on the desktop of the Macintosh computer.

I have a simpletech 120 GB external USB hard drive with NO power supply. Do you know what the power rating is (ac or dc, how many volts, amperage...) or where I can get a new power supply for it? -Thanks

12VDC, 1.5A external power adapter Well that is what this page says, it's not your 120GB drive but unsure if it's no the same model maybe. However all external HDD that need a power supply should be needing 12 volts, as they are just internal drives mounted in a shell and some simple circuitry to power and connect it.

I have a 320gb toshiba external hard drive, i've been using it around 3 years without any trouble. A few days ago i lost the cable connecting it to the PC. I bought a few cables but no use. Doesn't...

Hi there,

This is because there is a connection problem between the external drive and the computer. If you have changed cables to no avail, you can open the casing of the external drive where you will find the hard disk inside. Unplug the two cables connected to the harddisk and replug it after a minute. Then try again. If it still does not work, then you need to buy just a usb enclosure and plug the harddisk there to be able to use it again.

Hope this helps. Thank you for using FixYa.

I have a Maxtor One Touch 4 Mini 120GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive, I've previously used it multiple times in the past, importing AND exporting data. For some reason though after using it on one computer...

try testing it in another computer. if you have the same problem. then there might be an issue with the drive.

to recover your data. unplug external drive from the computer and open the external hard drive case. remove the hard drive inside. with you computer off and disconnected from the wall open the case to your computer. look and see how the hard drive inside is connected in your computer and add the external the same way. you might need a cable to connect it. you can simply disconnect the cdrom and plug the hard drive instead. make sure the external hard drive is not touching any electronics inside the pc. now you can turn on the computer. give the computer a minute to detect the new drive and assign a drive letter. navigate to my computer and select the newly added hard drive. copy and paste all the data you want to save. after everything has been backed up format the external drive to clear any bugs that may be causing it to be recognised in its case.

when finished remove the hard drive, plug in the cdrom, close the case, plug back into the wall, and return external drive to its case.

HDD upgrade to extensa 6601 Wlmi.

The BIOS determine the maximum size hard drive that can be installed in the laptop. Put a smaller hard drive in the laptop say 120Gb hard drive, you will lose approx 10% in the formatting process.
Use the 180GB in another laptop or put it into an USB hard drive adapter case and use it as a portable external hard drive.
