Most likely motor wont turn or blower is obstructed.

Try to spin the tub with your hand while starting the drier and holding down the door switch.

check and see if there is any thing in the dryer vent if not.open the door hold the door switch in like the door is shut.have your wife push the start switch in and turn the drum counterclock wise if it starts then the motor has gone bad if it hums still its still the motor.if it does start stop the dryer and try restarting several times sometimes they get a dead spot and it may work for years or may die tomorrow but these are a couple of things to try good luck

Dryer won't start. has power, lights are on, when I push start I just get a loud humming sound.

Try to turn the tub by hand, if it will not move or is real hard to turn, your motor may be locked down. They usually make a humming sound when you try to start.

Start Button Hums when Pushed

Your contactor is getting weak. Try bouncing the front of the machine once or twice while it hums. If that works you'll need a new contactor. Do not let the humming go on for to long it could becme a fire hazard.Shut the machine off right away if you hear it.

Maytag dryer mod #mde600ayw only makes a humming noise when start switch pushed will not turn.

a hum with a burning smell means the motor winding has failed.
you can try this: open the door and hold in the door switch, have another person hold the start button. You manually roate the drum by grabbing a fin and moveit while the unit is humming.IF the dryer starts, you need a motor.
Good Luck!

GE Dryer DWSR473GV0WW periodically just hums when turning on switch

if it hums when you start it means switch is ok. problem may be the motor capacitor. to check, take off the top and give the drum a push in the normal direction of rotation. if it goes then motor capacitor is faulty - cheap part
