Question about Samsung HL-P5063W 50" Rear Projection HDTV

Hlp5063 no picture, have tested and replaced....

Todays date: 07-31-09. As to some of the other postings, my tv never gets a picture. It does turn on. Here is what I have done so far: I've replaced the bulb and the ballast. Same problem exists. I can hear the color wheel spinning. I am concerned that one of the two parts I've replaced is also bad. Does anyone know how much voltage the ballast should be putting out to the bulb. my multimeter is only showing a little over 13 volts. Also, is the small pigtail wire going to the ballast a switch that turns it on and off? If so, what is the part on the other end of that wire. Jeff M. I am not going down without a fight with this TV!!!!

To clarify, 3 lights do blink on power button. When ballast fires, it fires at 183 volts and levels at a little over 13 volts. Does anyone know how much it takes to ignite the bulb? Is 183 volts enought?

I may know what the reason is for the problem, thanks to a tip from Sparko1, thanks Sparko1, but I haven't had time to confirm this. During the period of 1997 through mid 2000, there was a taiwanese company that stole another companies formula for capacitors. I found an article on the web explaining about this company and how when it obtained the formula, they didn't have the correct formula for cooling them, so they improvised and started manufacturing them. This is the same time frame that these samsungs were built. I'm not sure if this is the reason, but it fits the picture. What happened to the products manufactured, the capacitors started mushrooming, leaking and in some cases literally exploding. When I get the time, I'm going to pull all the boards out and first visually inspect them. If this is what is going on, then samsung should of recalled all of their products like many other companies did. This probably would of caused a major hit to the company. It would be easier to just give the run-a-round to the consumers and hope to avoid costly recalls. This would explain perfectelly why my ballast is only putting out a minimal charge to the lamp.

The Ballast voltage should 300 volts. You may have a problem on the power board. Possibly some bad capacitors. Look for the tops of the capacitors to be domed instead of flat.

Samsung hlp-5063w no picture when its on

Do you have three flashing lights on the front? You most likely have a problem with your lamp or color wheel. Those two component combined are pretty much the guts of your TV. If you are handy, you can replace those parts yourself. I have a 50" Samsung DLP and I've already replaced those to items myself. Otherwise, you can contact Samsung at 1-800-SAMSUNG and they can assist.

I bought my parts using Amazon, had them shipped to me, and took an afternoon to take about the back of the TV; documenting everything and taking photos of the progress, until it was done. There may be video tutorials on Youtube. There was for my model (HLS5086). Here is a great link to help you along. Good luck.

It seems that the dial knob and the electronic opto coupler don't work anu more. You can replace the digital panel by try to find a broken machine on ebay. Unless you are an electronics engineer like me (you can try to replace the optocoupler). See the post on leaking xp7240 for opening up the machine... it's tricky but easy.

Samsung hlp5063

That means that the color wheel, ballast and lamp are working properly. It seems more like a video source failure or one of the thermal sensors that is mounted on top of the color wheel assembly.
Will keep you posted about my findings with my TV.
