There are different formats of DVD's. Not all will play on all DVD players. I am copying a part of an article that better explains it and will include the link to the whole article so you can read it. If this doesn't make any sense to you please let me know and I will try to explain it more fully for you. Now on to the explanation......

With so many different formats — DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-ROM — how do users know which DVD format is compatible with their existing systems, and why are there so many different formats for DVDs? The following information sheds some light on DVD's different flavors, the differences between them and the incompatibility issues that the differing technologies have sprouted.
Why So Many DVD Formats?
The crucial difference among the standards is based on which standards each manufacturer adheres to. Similar to the old VHS/Beta tape wars when VCRs first hit the markets, different manufacturers support different standards. Often called a format war, both the industry and consumers are still waiting to see which format will emerge as the industry standard.
Plus or Minus - What's The Difference?
The different variations on the term DVD (e.g. +R, -R, -ROM, and so on) describe the way data is stored on or written to the disc itself. These are called physical formats.

Re v5500 . . . can i copy a movie from the vcr onto a dvd with this model???

You cannot transfer VHS to DVD on this model unit by itself. You can, however, connect the AV outputs of this unit (as a VCR) to the respective AV inputs of a separate DVD recorder - using yellow-white-red RCA cables - as long as the source tapes are not copy protected, and the appropriate disc formats for the DVD recorder are used.

Samsung DVD-V5500 will not get past loading when you put in a DVD

hello,

the reason the DVD player keeps loading the disc without showing anything else is that the lens of the DVD is too weak to read the disc.

the solution to the problem is simply for you to try to use a lens cleaner in cleaning the lens, or totally replacing the lens.

take care.

Freezes during playback

Hi. What I am trying to establish from my last question is whether the laser has become heat sensitive or whether there is a bit of dust buildup on the spindle table that might be causing the disc to have excessive wobble.
If the disc has excessive wobble, then the machine will have trouble tracking the outer tracks and will constantly skip as you have described after say 30 to 45 minutes.
If the laser has become heat sensitive then the same problem could potentially occur - The only difference being that if you were to restart the movie at that point, then the skipping would continue even at the beginning of the movie.
The first problem (wobble) is easy to fix - Clean the spindle table, the second problem may render the unit uneconomical to repair.

Samsung v5500 dvd combo problem

When you get a whirring sound, some click and disk not engaging on some disks, and not others , that is because lens cannot read the inital track on the CD/DVD.

This is either because disks are scratched , dirty or ruined by light and heath, or because the lens is dirty.

Try using a lens cleaner like the ones here.

If that does not work, then the unit must be taken apart and the lens cleaned with cotton buds and isopropyl alcohol.
