Question about Kenmore 55612 / 55614 / 5561 / 655619 Side by Side Refrigerator

1 Answer

My Kenmore Coldspot Model #106.61192101 is dripping water from the top inside....ice collects there then drips water down. there is no ice in the freezer...we keep it clean. A service guy came by and took a blow dryer to this area inside the fridge, but now that it's summertime and hot outside, the problem is back. What is wrong? Do we need to replace a part and if so, why didn't he replace it when he charged us $95? Thanks for your help, Ruthie

Your Kenmore may not perform well in the garage environment. Since it isn't practical to move it back inside, you may have to abandon the idea of having a second operating unit.

Hello,

Due to the blocked drain it sounds to me as if the vents in the ceiling of the refrig. has frozen over so no air can be circulated from the freezer into the refrig. section. This tip i wrote will show ya how to clear the drain and addation to clearing the drain the ice build up would need to be removed from the vents. Make sure the fridg. is level,(if it has been moved recently) there is a tube that allows the water from the evap. coils when defrosted to run to a drip pan. The tube is either frozen closed from prior defrosting or something is blocking the tube just below where it is leaking at. Turn fridg off and leave freezer door open (with a fan blowing in freezer if possible) for at least one hour and return to regular operation.

Hi, I have a 2003 Kenmore Coldspot refrigerator. It has started leaking water on the inside from the top(where cold air blows) into the bottom of the fridge. the model # is 106. 73192302. The serial # is...

Hello,

In the recent models, the fridge defrosts automatically,
once or twice a day, and the water is supposed to drain
down a long drain tube into a pan located at the bottom of
the fridge. This collected water in the pan evaporates
by the heat under the fridge.

Now the drain tube can get clogged, by food debris and/or
ice. Thus when the water cannot drip through the drain tube
the water drips inside the fridge.

The drain tube is located behind the fridge, which is pretty
easy to take it out and clean. However usually the clog is
not in the long tube but in the connector assembly located
in the backside of the fridge that leads to the long drain tube.

To get to the connector assemble, you need to unscrew and
take out the back panel of the freezer compartment. You would
see the evaporator coil and a tray under the coil where the water
is supposed to drip through. If you find the tray completely frozen
with ice, let it melt off. To speed up melting, you may blow
hot air via a hair dryer. Once the ice is clear, you should see
a drain hole in the middle of the tray. This could be clogged,
which needs to be unclogged.

Next unscrew and open the thermostat control assembly located
in the inside of the back of the refrigerator compartment just above
the light bulb fixture. Once you take the take the cover off (you will
also have to take the knobs out) you will see a small tray cup about
2" x 2" x 1/2" into which water from the top freezer compartment
drain hole is supposed to drain. Pull out the tray cup, and if clogged,
unclog it, clean it and put it back.

To check if the drain works ok, pour some water on the tray
under the evaporator coil (top freezer compartment) and see if it
immediately drains into the tray located at the bottom of the fridge
at the floor level. If it does, you got it; and you can assemble things
back in the reverse order you took the pieces apart.

Needless to say, use a vacuum cleaner with a long suction tube to clean
out all the collected mess under the fridge. No matter how good
your housekeeping is, the bottom of the fridge will be full of dust.

Hope this helpout.......

I have a kenmore refrigerator model 36369262991. I have water accumulating on my top shelf. It drips from the thermostat control panel. what is wrong?

I had a similar problem on a Whirlpool Fridge. In fact, there is a good possibility that your Kenmore is made my Whirlpool. As you probably know, Sears doesn't make appliances, but contracts with well-known appliance makers to manufacture kenmore-branded products.

If your fridge is an auto-defrost model, whenever it auto-defrosts, water from the melted ice collects in a tray behind the freezer, and drains into an evaporation tray at the bottom of the fridge through a drain tube. Over a period of time, the drain tube can become clogged, and instead of draining out of the freezer, the water overflows into the fridge. The clue is that the problem is intermittent -- the dripping stops between defrost cycles.

The fix is to remove the liner panels from the freezer, melt and sponge out any collected ice, clear ice from the drain with hot water, and clear any gunk from the drain tube with compresssed air or a flexible "snake." I used 1/8" pvc tubing as a snake.

It isn't hard to do, but if you are nervous about disassembling parts of your fridge, you will need to get a pro to do it.

Water at bottom of refrigirator

Find the drain line from the freezer to the evaporation pan near the motor. Often the line is visible on the back of the fridge. That line is plugged either with food residue or the collection point in the freezer is solid ice. The self defrost feature melts the frost and drains it to the evap pan. If you remove the floor from the freezer area, you will see the collection point. When the line gets plugged with food, no water drains and then freezes to block the line even worse. So, if there is ice at the collection point, remove it somehow, maybe a hair dryer, and then clear the line by blowing compressed air from the bottom of the drain hose through to the collection point.

Water dripping from freezer onto top shelf of fridge with ice buildup back of freezer

the defroster isn't close enough to the drain to be effective. remove the back wall of the inside of the freezer, remove the excess ice. clear out the ice from the drain using hot water and a turkey baster. there is a kit from whirlpool that uses a piece of metal and a screw around the defrost rod, but I found out that a piece of 14 gauge solid core wire with the insulation stripped off works great too. stick the stripped wire into the drain, 2 to 3 inches, and wrap the rest around the defrost rod.
