Question about CD Drives

1 Answer

DVD drive not working. It will only play DVD R's but doesn't even read any DVD RW's. It also will not burn/erase on any DVD type. Have opened and unplugged the drive - didn't work. Dell told me to restore factory settings and backup to ext. drive - is this my only option before I buy another DVD- RW drive??

Re: DVD drive not working. It will only play DVD R's but...

In the past I have seen that drives burn disks that are not compatible/ readable with other drives. The strange part being that both drives are from the same manafacurer (LG) puchased within one month of another. Regretfully, I found no solution for this...

Have maxell dvd-rw 4.7gb with 2hrs time; i need it to be formated; so that i can record programs so that I can watch them later like the Pat's game because I get up early and work 12hours days

DVD - & + are different writing formats that emerged and are still being argued over as to which is the best so these days to avoid any consumer confusion most manufacturers produce dual format writers that can write in both - and + ( but some writer can only write in minus if its a - drive so if you bought a + disk it woulnt work and vice versa )

CD types and by no means a comprehensive listing....

CDR ~ Write once
CDRW ~ Write and Erase many times

DVD-R ~ Write once
DVD+R ~ Write once
DVD-RW ~ Write and Erase many times
CVD+RW ~ Write and Erase many times
( These have a 4.7gb limit )

Hope this helps you

I have bought a second hand toshiba external cd player xm 1902b. it wont play dvd's. is it not set up to do so?

This is a CD-ROM drive. CD drives will not read DVDs. You need a DVD-RW if you're going to be burning DVDs or if you're only going to be watching DVDs then a DVD-ROM drive would work.

Emachine EL1200 won't burn dvd's.

I researched the Emachine EL1200 and it IS equipped with a DVD burner so there is no reason it shouldn't work. Return it while it is still under warranty. There is a 1 year warranty.

If it is out of warranty (system is older than 1 year), the drive can be replaced.

Dvd drive on dell computer

If you have not recently added any software or did any other changes to your system, try this first. Shut down your computer and open the side panel with a Phillips screw driver. Look for the connectors for the drive and power main (the small one). Unplug them both and reconnect them and make sure that they are firmly in place. If this fails, your burner does not work and needs replacing 6a6a5ed.jpg
