How do you test a water pump

Only way I know is by removing the pump and inspecting the impeller for pitting and/or wear. Also checking the impeller for excessive side to side and in and out play.

What would cause a combination of P0304 and P2293 OBD codes on a 2007 Passat 2.0T?

P0204 is miss fire detected on #4 cylinder.

Below is TSB from VW on your problem...a common one.

Technical Product Literature Transaction No.: 2015153/1
MIL ON, DTC P0087, P1093 or P2293 Stored in ECM Fault Memory Release date: Jun 29, 2007
Condition
15 07 04 June 29, 2007 2015153
MIL ON, DTC P0087, P1093 or P2293 Stored in ECM Fault Memory
MIL ON with the following DTCs may be stored in ECM fault memory:
DTC Description
P0087 Fuel Rail / System Pressure - Too Low
P1093 Fuel Trim 2, Bank 1 Malfunction
P2293 Fuel Pressure Regulator 2 Performance

Technical Background
Excessive wear of intake camshaft lobe that drives the high pressure fuel pump. The wear limits maximum pump piston lift, causing fuel rail pressure fluctuations.
The wear on the camshaft lobe can also lead to wear on the base of the high pressure fuel pump cam follower.
Production Solution
Increase surface hardening of camshaft lobe for the high pressure fuel pump
Improved intake camshafts have Part No. 06F109101B.
Service

• Remove the high pressure fuel pump and visually inspect:
1. Base surface of the cam follower -6- in contact with the camshaft lobe.
2. Tip of the high pressure fuel pump plunger.
3. High pressure fuel pump camshaft lobe.

If the base of the cam shaft follower looks like -C- or -D-, no excessive wear is present.
Cam follower and camshaft should not be replaced.
If the cam follower base surface is excessively worn so that its surface is concave -B- or missing -A-, inspect the intake cam shaft lobe for wear.

cam.jpg

If the high pressure fuel pump camshaft lobe shows excessive wear, replace the intake camshaft with Part No. 06F109101B and the cam follower with Part No. 06D109309C, see Group 15 Engine - Cylinder head, Valvetrain in ElsaWeb.

Inspect the tip of the high pressure fuel pump plunger for excessive wear.
If excessive wear is found the high pressure pump must also be replaced, see Group 20 Fuel supply in ElsaWeb.
Tip:
High pressure fuel pump plunger damage is only possible if the cam follower base has a hole in it and the plunger tip has come in direct contact with the camshaft lobe.
If no excessive wear can be found in the high pressure fuel pump cam follower or intake camshaft lobe, or if the damage is found in camshafts with part number 06F 109 101 B, create a Technical Assistance Contact Ticket under the Concern Type Engine and Engine Electronics in ElsaWeb.
Attach the complete diagnostic log to the contact, and call the VW Technical Assistance Center for further assistance.

I can't get the impeller off. It doesn't have a screw and I can lock the shaft and try to turn it counter clockwise, but it will not budge.

there is most likely corrosion in the threads between the impeller and the motor shaft. You will need an impeller wrench to get enough torque to spin it loose., you may have to replace the impeller if it is excessively corroded as it may be cracked as well.

Pump is only creating about 1/2 capacity. I have checked all seals etc., do the impellers on these pumps wear out? The pump is about 4 years old.

the impellers only usually get damaged with extreme cavitation. You most likely have a clogged impeller. It sometimes happens when the pump basked is cracked or damaged and it lets debris through to the impeller. You may have to remove the bolts and separate the seal plate from the wet end to access/inspect the impeller.

IMPELLER KEEPS BREAKING

When you replace the impeller be sure the wear ring goes on with the wide side out (away from the impeller) and you lube the "O" rings before you put the pump back together so It does not bind. I hope this helps, good luck.

1hp whisperflow pump, seal change. How?

Make sure breaker/power to pump is off. Remove the six bolts holding the wet end to the seal plate. Remove the diffuser to expose the impeller. Remove the screw in the middle of the impeller by turning clockwise (left hand threads). Remove the dust cap at the rear of the motor and use a wrench to hold the shaft while you remove the impeller by turning counterclockwise. Once the impeller is off, remove the four bolts holding the seal plate to the motor. Press the old seal out of the seal plate and clean it thoroughly. Remove the ceramic part of the seal from the impeller and clean it thoroughly as well. Apply a thin coat of lube to the seal plate and impeller where the new seal will go. Remove the new PS1000 shaft seal from the box (being careful not to touch the ceramic or carbon face with your fingers), press the metal part into the seal plate carefully, try not to bend the metal and make sure its completely seated against the seal plate. You can now install the seal plate back onto the motor and secure with four bolts. Press the ceramic part into the impeller, use cardboard or paper between your fingers and the ceramic face. Once you have seated the seal into the impeller, hold the motor shaft and thread the impeller on until snug, then reinstall the stainless screw, remember it is left hand thread so you'll have to turn it counterclockwise. Reinstall the diffuser over the impeller and then install the wet end onto the seal plate using the six bolts, don't overtighten them.

It is a good idea to replace the tank o-ring when taking to pump apart, but if the o-rings are in good condition, just apply a light coat of lube and reuse them.

This is a general guide for replacing a seal, if you have trouble removing the impeller, you may need an impeller wrench and a tool to hold the motor shaft.

I hope this helps, if you have any specific questions, email me at mail@leisurepoolservice.com

Ld help code

The fault code "LD" indicates "long drain" condition. It's not only if the water drained, but how fast it drained. Check the drain line for kinks or obstructions. Check the pump. Remove the hoses and use a flashlight to look into the suction port. Make sure nothing is clogging the pump (like the occasional stray sock) and check the pump impeller. Make sure there are no broken/missing blades and that the impeller spins freely. If there are broken/missing blades or if you can't get the impeller to spin freely, the pump is defective. Hopefully it's just a clogged drain line, pump, or a jammed impeller. Sorry for your trouble and I hope this helped. Best wishes.

The code nd is displayed what does nd mean

This code indicate "no drain" (nd) condition. Check the drain line for kinks or obstructions. These washers have shown a tendency to permit hard objects (like pins, coins, keys, etc) to get to the pump. Remove the hoses from the pump and use a flashlight to look into the suction port. Look for anything clogging the pump and check the pump impeller. Make sure there are no missing/broken blades and that the pump impeller spins freely. Hard objects can damage the blades on the impeller. If any blades are broken/missing or if you cannot get the impeller to spin freely, the pump is defective. Hopefully it's just a clogged drain line or pump. Sorry for your trouble and I hope this helped. Best wishes.

FL code on a Kenmore Calypso top loader

The FL error code means:
Flood Condition:
FL flashes if any overfill condition occurs. This condition occurs when excessive water in the tub causes the overfill switch to trip. The control must realize that the trip was due to an overfill condition instead of a suds lack condition in order for FL to be displayed

With an overfill condition, the beeper repeats a warning every 10 seconds with no time-out. The pump is cycled in drain mode for 30 seconds on, 30 seconds off until the overfill switch resets or power is discontinued to the unit.

Press STOP/CANCEL to clear the display.

This problem I see on these are the water pumps getting clogged with lint or other things, causing the pump not to pump all of the water out at times.

There is a check "valve" in the drain assembly that seems to sometimes cause problems with the FL error code. You can remove this piece, and might avoid changing the pump.
