Hi.

  1. On the Nintendo DSi Menu, use the stylus to select the Settings ("wrench") icon.
  2. Select the right arrow to reach the forth page, then select "Format System Memory."
  3. Choose this to erase all saved data, and return the system to the state in which it was purchased

What data will be erased?

• Data saved on the system memory, such as software

Like all hardware devices it depends on how old the unit is and whether the problem is covered under warranty. More than likely you have bad sectors on the HDD and it will not format which will require a new HDD. Check and see if it is still under warranty if not you will need to purchase a new one.
